"Insert Car Key" even though key is in!

So, this happened today. I entered my 2011 V60 and tried to start the engine but I got the "insert car key" message even though the key was in the slot. I removed, reinserted and pushed the button multiple times, also used the second key and still nothing. Other electronics seem to work fine (locking/unlocking included). I checked the immobilizer fuse but it was OK.
Any ideas?

Thanks
Andreas

I get that message when the key and cellphone are in the same pocket. Annoying!

If your key isn't damaged, I suggest having the dealer check the key fob battery. Not sure if you can open those up yourself or not.

Yes, you can open the key fob. I get this stupid message about every 6-9 months. Super easy and quick to do. It take a whole 3 minutes. Last thing you want is your car to leave you stranded over a stupid $5 battery!
Remember to replace both batteries in the fob.

Thanks for your replies, I tried both fobs (mine take one battery each) with new batteries today without luck. It has come down to towing the vehicle to Volvo service. Unfortunately, the electric parking brake can't be released because of the "insert car key" issue which blocks the power to the parking brake switch!!!
And to top it all up, now I'm getting a "low battery" message even though its a 6 month old battery! Is it because of all the start button pushing or does it have to do with the initial not recognizing the key issue?
I am completely lost and even official Volvo cant find a solution...

Yes, there are two batteries in each fob separated by a plastic cover.

If you have a battery charger/tender at home, try that before you tow to the dealer. Save yourself some time if you can. More than likely the dealer will charge the battery. versus replace it. Depends on how nice your dealer is to you.
When I don't use the car for an extended period of time, I have it connected to a trickle charger to avoid the "low battery" warning issue. (Also very common.) Lots of electronics tend to drain the battery fairly quickly.

Different car and key but a sort of similar situation happened to my keys for my old V50. The batteries were fine but the key would not register with the car. Had one replaced before the end of safe and sound and one fail after. The dealer didn't know what caused it and they couldn't get it to work no mater what they did (not 100% on what they tried though).

Might just be a bad key

So quick update, the car got repaired by changing the immobilizer antenna unit (31252151) and reinstalling its software (30659360) as well as the CEM's software (31270561). The VIDA error code was B102487. This was on 19 JAN 2018.

However, about 1 month later (16 FEB 2018) the same problem reappeared and the car can't be moved! WTF?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

Not sure if those memebers are still members. Assuming you've changed the batteries in the FOB, I would dissconnect the main battery, as a reset, and make sure the main battery is in a good state of charge. Be careful of those fuse links on the positive battery cable. They can break if mechanically stressed too much.

Hello.
Not yet. Even Volvo dealer having problems to find the cause... and it cost me money

They changed some equipments like key, key antenna, immobilier pieces etc.. but the problem is still there.

Last recommendation from VOLVO is now to change the CEM module ( with fuses)..
They will change it this week.

My main question is that Volvo is not able to find a problem and as a customer, they force you to pay all the unnecessary pièces they changed..

I called my insurance for some legal support on this issue.. hoping that this CEM is the problem.

One lessons learned for me, this is my last volvo experiencing the customer support that have.

4th intervention, they changed the CEM module which resolved the issue.

As you have written, it's weird that they have changed pieces which had no problem.
My observation is that a technician in a dealer is connecting the computer to car, analyzing the errors , and changing the pièces without thinking if it makes sense to change it considering the car's issue.

So I deducted that bringing my volvo to a volvo dealer is expensive and not environment friendly.
They should have penalties to waste working pieces...

..yes, with non-standard issues like that it is better to search for non-official shops that specializes in volvo.

My guess regarding this issue is the following: SCU and CEM communicates through LIN bus. Both sides have LIN tranciever chips which cost like 2 bucks. Probably LIN tranciever died in CEM which resulted in "no communication with SCU" error. Of course, could be tens of other reasons. Anyway, good it is solved!
