Id like to start changing my own oil because its a lot cheaper, i wouldnt have to take the time to go to the dealer and wait but i wanted to know whether or not its something that can easily be done with ramps.

It is very easy. Yes you can do it if you have a ramp. If you've done an oil change before than it will be even easier. Only thing I would recommend is the filter tool.

the oil filter resides in a resusable plastic canister. If you're not careful a strap wrench or plier type (which I use) could crack the casing. Actually, I'm able to take mine off with my hands using a little grunt. But there is a socket type that fits over the bottom of the filter canister and attaches to a rachet.

And the oil is real easy to do. Get 6 quarts, but start checking the level after 5.5 to make sure you don't overfill.

Are more of you just draining the oil out the filter and pan, or do you use one of those oil vacuums, that pulls it from the dipstick tube...I feel like a dipstick tube just for asking...

+1 for this tool: http://www.amazon.com/Assenmac...DIKFO

Worth every penny.... (Sorry IPD, as much as I love you, your Oil Filter Tools - both of them - suck)

Get a set of the Rhino Ramps from AutoBone (about $30) and you are off to the races.

Now...if you want to be a real pro about it, "finish the race" by getting your hands on a Torque Wrench for your drain plug and Filter Cover. Off the top of my head, the Cover is 18 ft/lbs and the plug is 26 ft/lbs, but don't take my word for it, look it up....but that is the range if you are going to buy the wrench.

All that and you are ready to be your own Pit Crew...you might need a few Metric sockets;)

Enjoy crawling around in the dirt like the rest of us:) You're gonna love it!!!

PS: Use Synthetic Oil...seriously...don't argue....just do it.

Where do you take your oil?
I live in NC where I can just take my used oil to the satellite trash/recycling site a couple miles up the road and drop it off in a sealed container (the oil bottles, a milk jug, etc.) But I'm pretty sure that any place who sells motor oil also has to accept used motor oil as well (i.e. Autozone, Advance, etc.) except they usually want you to dump it in their tank yourself (and risk getting oily again)

I love that rotor. I've had to dump my own oil at PepBoys a few times and looked at the guy like he has 4 heads the first time he told me. After that, i would just leave my "car clothes" on and head over there (towels on the seat), then get dirty looks from other patrons because I looked like a street urchin.

does all of the oil drain out if you use ramps because the car wont be level that way
The drain plug is at the rear center of the pan, so if you are on ramps, it will actually tilt the car so the the oil might drain a little better!

Makes sense to me.

draining via plug and filter + gravity. I've never used a dipstick vacuum line to change the oil.

A vaccumer pump could be a good option at this time of the year, no? I've been thinking about using one for the oil change I do in mid-winter when it's too cold and dirty in the garage to lie under both my Volvo's to chage the oil. Right now if I had a pump I'd change the oil in both cars in now time with now muss or fuss (no need for cover-alls either). Granted the filter doens't get change and maybe more old oil gets left behind but it's still better than not getting around to it and going too long before the next needed change, no?

Am I missing anything else bad about a vaccum pump through the dipstick tube?

Elevating the front probably helps a bit but lots gets left in the lines and cooler (I'd guess at 0.5L). I flush 2L through one/year to help clean it all out.

By the way, if you are slim and somewhat flexible you can do the oil and filter without ramps

Dude, I guess I thought I was somewhat slim and flexible until I read your post. I don't think I can even see my drain plug without ramps or a jack!

LOL!

Ramps or no ramps, I just really hate lying down on the garage floor to do oil changes at this time of year (darn cold and messy). My XC90 is due for a change now, I gota look into one of those vacuum pumps

If you have over 50k and live in a harsh climate it might be a good idea to get a new filter cover. The cover is reusable but it may become brittle over time and prone to cracking. At least that's what I have read. I just ordered one from IPD with my last change as cheap insurance should it crack.

Thanks Oceans60R,

Just ordered the wrench. I haven't changed oil on a car since high school (many years ago). Looking forward to it with the "R".

I really love this car!
Good deal. Just be sure to keep any receipts for oil and filters in case they are needed for a warranty claim.

The vacuum pump would be suitable for your situation LTA, but I think gravity drain is better if you have the option.

I just plop some cardboard down and pick a dry (or frozen) day to do it. It doesn't take long.

Re: (T5 for Life)

Do you like beer?

formula for oil change is
6 quarts oil + Oil filter + 6 pack + oil filter wrench + socket/wrench + nitrile gloves + waste container = win

proceed as following
crack open beer --> drain oil into waste container --> finish beer and crack start a new one --> remove filter --> place in new filter with a bit of new oil on the seal and close drain plug --> start new beer --> fill with 2 quarts --> drink beer --> fill with two quarts --> drink beer --> fill with one quart and slowly with the last until dipstick is at right level --> drink beer and feel like a man, looking at what you have created (hopefully you have a massive beard and are wearing lumberjack flannel to be man to the extreme)
