I have an 06 GT and like it. I sometimes miss the manual transmission but overall I am happy as it also makes my wife happy when she drives it. I can say there is a huge difference in acceleration if in Advanced mode vs. Comfort or Sport so to get the potential of the 6 speed GT, one needs to be in advanced.

 

I love mine. Normally in this type of car I would opt for a manual, but I just couldn't do it with all the traffic here. It is so nice just being able to put the car in D and go. When I need to get somewhere in a hurry I use the faux manual which works great. I always have the sport function enabled so the trans shifts quicker and at higher RPM's.

Currently having an 04 GT, you would be a far better judge of the difference between the two than someone who hasn't owned an 04...you shouldn't have to abuse the demo car just to detect if the difference is worth the $$. If you do, maybe you wouldn't often get to enjoy whatever difference there might be (unless you abuse your car much of the time!)

FWIW, I was curious too (have a GT myself) and test drove an 06--I could tell there was a difference, but just not enough for me to make it worth the gigantic depreciation hit I'd take.

I own both an 04 manual and a 06 GT - for me the 06 GT is by far the better car. The suspension is way better, and the GT transmission is a lot smarter at matching the turbo boost than my brain is.

My 04 was purchased used and at a good price, so the depreciation hit is no big deal.
Extra bonus is the new car is Red (which I love compared to silver). Gobi interior is ok, if it was Atacama, I would buy it in a heartbeat, as the price I have been offered seems very fair. NO I don't push my car, except at highway speeds, so the difference isn't real noticable to me.

I went to a concert last night and I was took myself and three
of my friends who are not exactly small.

The 06 6 speed GT pulled really well with all of us in there. Also under that
additional weight load the turbo and stock exhaust sound pretty nice really

You have to really put your foot down. The lag is not bad at all

I was pretty impressed with it last night because I rarely have more
than one passenger and normally not any passengers

I think many drivers really do not push their foot down as you need to
do this really hard and keep completely down or the transmission "hangs up". I think Volvo really tried to improve 0-60 with this one maybe because it was so challenged

Instant traction is noticable on launch and I really believe the auto is faster and more important more reliable than abusing the M66.

Keep in mind I have two S60R cars one M66 and the other the 06 TF-80SC

So Jim I say if you are still going to have a S60R or V70R and you are staying with Volvo I would say get the 06 if you like GT.

Ok now that I said this I myself would wait for the 07 S60 or V70R
but this is not your question

Great info thanks. The only difference I was aware of for 07 was projector type headlights. Anything else significant I may have missed.

I can not remember if you are longboard or shortboard. Whatever. The point is not that there are changes but with Volvo the last model year is
almost undefeated (now I am think of World Cup in Munich hahaha) but they are really better model after model there is proof.

What I mean is I would just wait for the last model year but you could get the 06 but in the end (not so much the transmission) the entire car will be better

This is a long know thing in Volvos. Ask Johann or other experts and they will confirm

Volvo guneai pigs the intial model years and then tries pretty hard to improve based on failures

 

My 06 Gt took a M3..

 

Although I have never driven the 04/05 GTs, my 06 GT is really fantastic. As Nik said, being in SoCal is tough with a manual. I do still miss it at times but the manumatic mode is still pretty fun to use.

Also, as others have mentioned the car needs to be in "advanced" mode to show its full potential. Even in Comfort or Sport chassis mode with the Sport tranny button pressed, its not the complete same (in my opinion) as in full advanced. Really has some awesome pickup for an auto
