Help......I got a Serious Ticket for Accidentally Squealing my Tires

A cop in California pulled me over and said I squealed my tires. I did not even hear it and did not intend to do it.

2 Points on my driving record. $350 to $500 fine. You can receive upto 90 days in jail for this but I have a pretty clean driving record. First offense for this.

I am due for new tires in a few months......and it was very humid out and dew was forming on the inside of my windshield.

Does anyone else accidentally squeal the tires from time to time? Is this car more prone to this? 2004 S60R

Re: Help......I got a Serious Ticket for Accidentally Squealing my Tires (veryland)

I`ve tried to , just to know under what conditions it could happen- wet and dry, but have not been able to (even with the DTSC disabled)... I just thought it wasnt possible with the AWD. Sorry to hear about the ticket though.. In Canada the cops call that stunting and a few of my friends have been hit for that.

So you are saying you cannot squeal them from a stopped position?

He said I was doing it pulling away in first gear from a stop sign.

I am now starting to think maybe he saw the backfire from my exahaust which my car often does when switching to second gear.

The ticket is called "exhibition of speed". And I guess the backfire would draw a cops attention.

I doubt it. I just had it in for a tuneup at a Volvo dealer, surely they would have said something.

Surely you gest. This is a Volvo dealer we're talking about. They would have no reason to check the angle gear.

How else could you squeal the tires on an AWD car unless it isn't running AWD?

Your car won't do a burn out if nothing is broken.

What if your tires are pretty worn and "morning dew" is on the pavement......but everything else is working properly?

I am starting to think the cop saw the backfire and lied and said it was a burn out.

Maybe I could use this as a Defense in Court.

I don't think I did squeal the tires. It was a VERY strange stop. My car backfires when I shift into second gear....I am starting to think that was what he saw.

What are the symptoms when you have a broken angle gear?

Can you explain a little about where it is and what it does?

My car has 85,000 miles on it. All very tame city/highway miles. Is one likely to go out under these condtions and this mileage level?

Let me borrow your car for about 3 months and give me a blank check... you will be able to squeel them at will and do 4 wheel burnouts.

So you are agreeing that a Normal R should not be able to squeal the tires from a stopped postion?

I beg to differ. I drove Soledocs R last year when it was rather new. He has a 06 MT R.... anyways, I drove it and power shifted from first to second and the front tire(s) did chirp..... So maybe that is what ticked off the cop

Chirping the tires on a power shift is not a burnout.

To the original poster.....you have AWD issues. You should not be chirping your tires from a stop.

Ummm.......you will be in FWD mode and thus be able to spin/overpower the front tires.

It transfers power from the front wheels to the rear wheels. I suggest a bit of research.

More specifically, it turns the power 90 degrees. It is a known failure point on the car.

Also a possibility is the AOC (Haldex Active On demand Coupling).

Uh, that's soooo not cool. Did soledoc ever let you behind the wheel of his R again?

You're 42 and driving a Volvo. You should not be able to get at ticket for displaying speed. Your only crime was driving with out of state plates, I suppose. Wait for until the last minute and file a trial by written declaration with all the facts, mature driver, AWD Volvo, dry pavement. If that does not convince the judge, the cop will have forgotten you by the time it's processed by the court anyway.

I think you should fight it. Sounds a little out there. Just tell the judge "it's a Volvo". That should get the ticket waived.

Who ever heard of a fast Volvo, anyways???

P.S. Best of luck to you. Sounds like a pretty lame excuse for a ticket.

Are you more likely to spin out on wet or dry pavement?

I tried using the "its a Volvo" on a cop here in town once and she couldn't argue with me, but was not impressed anyway.. And I don't think the R's everywhere on the car helped my situation much either.

Go with this suggestion.

Or, if something IS wrong with your AWD, bring in a repair note and that should get it thrown out. The only times I've spun/chired are a) when my AWD wasn't working - in first gear whenever I pleased. b) hard shift into second.
