From leftlane.news:

"Freedom Ship will switch from the current Geely logo to the Gleagle logo and brand, with the King Kong switching to Emgrand and the Vision donning the Shanghai Englon brand... Freedom Ship will become Gleagle GC3, King Kong will become Englon SC6 and Vision will now be the Gleagle GC7."

The rationale? To classify the vehicles based on an "internal divisional hierarchy."

Re:

Is Geely just aligning with Volvo?

~ P1 - S40, V50, C70, C30
~ P2 - S60, XC90
~ P24 - XC60 V70 S80

Not to cause a kerfuffle! But, is there a need to consolidate Volvo any more than the P1, P2 & P24?

This Geely consolidation does lead by example and permits easy access to all Volvo parts suppliers -- thus improving Geely domestic brands.

The split of the Geely lineup into three different brands has been on the cards for some time and each will have its own segment.

Englon is the middle/upper brand but with Volvo on board that positioning needs adjusting - maybe if Englon goes global

If Volvo remains with its broad product line up in the premium segment, Geely with need a new brand for the coveted super luxury limo market. Volvo can do S80L or S100. Maybe limos but image is very market specific.

I was under the impression the three brands were for the Chinese market, not for the export versions of Geely's lineup

GLeagle = GLobal EAGLE

Emgrand = Grand Emperor

Shanghai Englon - Shaghai England

Car names are always a source of issue and another reason why I like the Volvo numbering

In an interview ages ago I recall a Volvo Exec said Volvo has numbers because people should note "I have a Volvo" and people ask "which one" ie its the universal brand image/quality of Volvo which is important, not the model ie all models represent Volvo values.

Ford tried to launch the Focus and the Mondeo as standalone brands. Sold as a Mondeo not a Ford. That didnt work.

Personally, I think numbers make far more
sense. Ford also paid something daft like ÂŁ1.3million to a consultancy for the word Mondeo. The Focus was meant to be called the Ikon (1999) but that means something rude in certain markets.

The Vauxhall Nova (no-go) had to renamed Corsa for the spainish market.

The Suzuki Swift with its 0.9cc engine is anything but!

The Mitsubishi Carisma has none.

From experience lets not forget the Nissan Cedric, the Fairlady, the Mazda Bongo Friendly (that's a MPV by the way) or the Starrion.

Names are tricky!

These names are absolutely daft.

Yes, that's why Cadillac and Lincoln switched to letters, so people would say "I drive a Cadillac MXS or whatever. The problem is that the Americans as usual have a very poor understanding of human psychology. In this case, no one can remember the differnet letter combinations.

Volvo, BMW and Mercedes have good nomenclature. Volvo is the best.

Do Americans have a poor understanding of human psychology or do the marketers have a poor understanding of Americans?

More to the point, will the Geely marketers be able to distinguish between what may work for the Chinese domestic market vs. what will work in the West? Or will they at least have the foresight to leave marketing decisions to those who do? [Not that Volvo's marketing under Ford has always been brilliant.]

Well, I'm referring to Cadillac and Lincoln, so that is implied, however you put it more eloquently.

Oh, I'm with you now. I thought you meant the American people.
