I think it is more about economy.
Fuel economy and cost are both factors. No need to lug around a heavier transmission built to handle over 400 Nm when torque is 300 Nm or less.

Biggest downer is the fact that Volvo yet again chose to offer gasoline engine's AT only while the least consuming diesel version is a manual.
The T2, T3 and T4 are all offered with a manual transmission.

There is apparently a new 7speed dual-clutch in the way for the smallest output.
that 7speed will also be the basic for Volvo next mild-hybrid powertrain.
Do you have the source for this? I am very concerned with reliability of dual-clutch tranny. VW DSG and Ford DCT on Focus got a lot of complains. The starting from still is the major concern. With hybrid powertrain maybe it can be mitigated by using the electric motor for starting.

I hope they do not offer DCT for the smaller engines in the vein of vw dry clutch 7-spd DSG, it sucks! The DSG should be for the performance models IMO.

Yannis, will we see the 3 cylinder before SPA? Why no 8-spd for the 3 cylinder anyway?

So, why volvo want to change 4 cylinder to 3? Does the 4 cylinder can run more smoothly?
Volvo is working on 3 cylinders to be introduced soon, maybe next year already. It isn't a secret. The 1500CC 4 cylinder however was a bit of a surprise because there wasn't much mentioning of this version. From what I recall VEA was based of 500 CC per cylinder strategy with the 3 cylinder engine becoming a 1500 CC.

So can we expect a 4cyl 1.5L diesel soon as well? Mated to an auto tranny ofcourse...

Hi

That's interesting about the new 6 speed autos being coupled to the VEA engines. Previous information suggested it would be 8 speeds with the VEA engines. I guess 8 speeds isn't required for all engine variants then e.g. the lower power ones.

That's also interested about the 1500 cc VEA engine. Any official links to info on it? Makes sense as an interim offering before the 1.5 3 cylinder engine comes on stream.

I had presumed Volvo would launch a 1 litre 3 cylinder engine as per the industry trend. Noted BMW's 3 cylinder is also 1.5 litres too.

The VEA were 500cc per cylinder but that seems flexible if they have now made or plan a 1.5 4 cylinder engine. Makes a 1 litre 3 cylinder also possible. (for Geely or for a range extender hybrid Volvo etc).

With greater flexibility now Volvo can offer manuals with all engines. Indeed manuals on the diesels for greater efficiency so why not offer this on the petrols as well.

Manuals, traditional automatics (6 and 8 speed Aisin Warner units) plus a few confirmations (including by Head of R&D Peter Mertens) of a dual-clutch transmission. Lots of choice!

Microhybrid (motor between engine and gearbox) on the way (no pure EV mode apart from low speeds e.g. Toyota Prius type driving) whereas the Volvo Electric Rear (what's Volvo's abbreviation for it?? ) offers pure EV model too.

Mybe the 1.5 litre 4 cylinders engine is ready for Geely?

To better meet fuel efficiency standards/limits by raising the corporate average. Putting these little buggers in basic fleet cars globally will go a long way in achieving this. There's also the Geely runabouts to consider (competing against the Fiesta's and Polo's of the world).

FYI media.volvocars.com lists the first VEA AWD drive car (the V40CC T5 with the 2.0 petrol VEA) as being mated to the 8 speed AW TG-81SC (Technical data, MY2015)

So the lower power VEA engines are also coming with AWF6F25 for torque under 300nm (also found in the Bmw i8) or AWF6F45 for torque under 480nm (see medels info above)
