Ok, I need some help guys...So, I told you all about the fuel pump and control module being replaced after my car died suddenly. Well, I have been noticing the faint smell of gas in my car since my pump and control module were replaced. Tonight, I come out of work and get in my car and the smell almost knocks me out. The smell of gas is so powerful that I have to let the car "air out" before I drive home.

When I get home, I take the back seat out were the pump is located and the smell gets worse. I open the round shiny plate up and there is gas all over the top of the pump and around the plastic. Also, the rubber seal was not properly put back together (some wires were not seated.)

I dried everything off and used a hair dryer to get it totally dry. I then replaced the rubber seal correctly and bolt the lid back down. I am leaving the car open tonight to air it out. I am also going to leave the back seat out for a couple of days.

Man, I am MAD!!

My question for all of you more familar: Is there supposed to be gas on top of the pump? Does the tank / pump get its air from around the side of the circular pump? Is this where the gas is coming from?? I think it was worse because this is my first fill-up since the pump was replaced.

Please HELP!!

Just wondering, I didnt follow the previous thread, so who did the work?

Did the replace the rubber seal for the top of the fuel pump?

From my experience wiht my 02' maxima, once you remove the pump cover, and the rubber seal. The seal will be disfigured due to the gasoline saturation. The seal will need to be replaced.

That might be the problem. Someone used an old seal?

No, that should not be a problem as I've had mine removed before to remove something that lodged in between the float sensor.

It was more likely a case of poor re-installation.

BTW, always ensure less than 1/2 tank before removing the pump or float sensor as the fuel will just gush out.

For some strange reason, using a hair dryer to evaporate trace fuel remains near an open vapor source sounds a bit risky. I wouldn't recommend using a hair dryer to dry out fuel in any way shape or form in any area. Then again, I'm not sure how big an area you were talking about.

I took it back and they reset the seal on the pump and then fixed the other seal. I let the car air out all day and the gas smell is gone. The service man and the tech were awesome. Everything was fixed in about 30 minutes. Amazing. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
