I have a 2005 2.5 XC90. In recent posts I've noticed that you should not be washing off the engine. Is there problem with this.. I have done it since the vehicle was new. 89,000 miles.

On all of the V8's there is a balance shaft that has a bearing that can get wet. From late 2005
there is a weep hole that is supposed to drain the water, but I would guess that even that
can get plugged. So best not to wash any Volvo V8. Early 2005 V8's, the water can just sit there
and ruin your day sometime later..

Now any modern engine with all of the electronic connections, water can cause all sorts of problems. If
you do wash, do not use any pressurized water. Spray wand is a no-no to wash with. Safest is to
just leave the engine alone.

It is bad for all electronic/electric components in the engine bay...period.

If you are a DIY person - just put a piece of a clean cloth over the fender, when you lean over...

I NEVER understood the desire for washing the engine...when I see the "spottless" engine bay of any used car - my first thought is...What that guy is trying to conceal? Major leaks?

It would help diagnosing leakage areas.

I think that it is other way around...the engine is often washed right before the car is sold to remove the indication of a leak..

As far as diagnosis is concerned...the engine of my 12 yo Mazda MPV is still clean enough to see the leaks, if any would develop...modern engine compartments are relatively well protected from dust and dirt.

And negative effect on electrical and electronic components outweighs all other considerations for me...+ my laziness...
