Re: engine noise for 2.4i (goldenlabs99)

I have the 2.4i and I think it's actually pretty quiet - especially at cruising speeds - but I kind of like the lower engine note when accelerating, I think that is characteristic of the Volvo 5 cylinder.

You're right, the engine noise is noticeable. But not because the engine is loud. Poor insulation IMHO. If you stand outside and listen to the car with the hood down, it is fairly quiet. Lift the hood up and the engine sounds really weird.

During acceleration it is pretty loud. But I like it. Gives the car some characteric traits.

Cruising it is very quiet. UNLESS YOU ARE CRUISING BETWEEN 80-85 mph ... have you noticed that? The engine is ridiculously loud during those speeds. Cruising at 90 is fine, fairly quiet. But between 80-85 it sounds like I'm flooring it... Can someone please confirm this for me.

Or is it because the car is running at 3000rpm - 3500rpm, which also is really loud. But that loudness I think is due to the Variable Valve Timing that our engines have. I used to love cruising at 80-85 mph... but now I have to slow it down or speed it up.
