ECU Location

I continually hear people saying that the ECU is somewhat vulnerable being in the location that it is; due to the extremes in temperature, moisture, etc.

Why is Volvo not putting these in the trunk or under the back seat if it’s such a problem?

I know some vehicles have the ECU located under the dash.

How hard would it be to relocate the ECU somewhere safer? I know there’s a boat load of wiring involved.

Anyone ever relocate the ECU without any major headaches?

I believe it is only "vulnerable" if you remove it from the stock intake box. And this is debatable as well...

An open exposed ECU outside the stock air box is only 15* hotter. I don't know if that's enough to cause an issue, but I am a skeptic that aftermarket intake has caused the ECU failure. Done plenty of ECU replacements on Volvo that have never been modified.

I would not relocate purely due to the amount of wiring necessary. I will be working on what I call the ice box for the ECU. Stay tuned, projected for this summer.

Really would just be for piece of mind, I took a temp reading of an ECU in the stock air box today that read at 130* which was what mine read at laying on top of the transmission... Prior I had a substantial temp difference but was a pretty cold day. This shows that when a car is hot off the freeway and heat soaked they read very closely the same.

Also, have to consider I have numerous modifications to reduce under hood heat temp so could very well be the differences I am seeing vs. someone else that doesnt.
