eBay DICE with Volvo online VIDA subscription

I want to upgrade the SENSUS software in my 2018 XC60. It looks to me that I can subscribe to VIDA online for 3 days at a cost of about $65 and then load the software myself. Someone told me that I should be able to do this easily. Any fundamental problems they're not telling me about?

Also, what should I use as a DICE? Do the ones sold on eBay suffice? Or are they incompatible with online VIDA? They often have dates associated with them, like 2014D. But reading this forum I get the sense that they are including an old (2014?) VIDA on DVD.

I'm a firmware engineer by profession, so I'm not too far out of my lane here. But with respect to VIDA and software uploads to a Volvo I have no idea what I'm doing. So any advice would be welcomed.

This is late, but here’s my input:

I’ve been using Chinese VIDA devices for years, and only this past year did I attempt to update any software in the car with one.

I got the subscription, and it worked flawlessly! As long as you order a device that has all 4 lights different colors or mentions that it is “full chip” then you should be good.

Make sure when you are doing the software updates to have the car hooked up to a battery charger. If the car dies while updating, then oof.

Overall using 2015 to update was very easy. I’m not sure if you can update the sensus software using VIDA but you can definitely update other things. I think Sensus might be a DVD you use to update but may be wrong.

2014 d simply refers to the version of VIDA included with a Dice unit, which was the last version available on DVD. Any previous version of VIDA still works, But you need 2014 d to talk to 2014 and 2015 model year cars. 2014 d will not talk to 2016 + cars (without modification)

Thanks guys for responding.

I'm still confused just a bit. If I buy a subscription to VIDA online, do I need the DVD that comes with the Dice? If so, can I update a 2018MY car with the software from a 2014d Dice combo and the online VIDA subscription, or will I need a Dice with newer software?

FWIW. I'm told by someone who should know that you can update SENSUS with VIDA via download. Hopefully I'll be able to tell you first hand whether this works. I'm ok with the general concept of SENSUS, but having to take the car to the dealer for software updates on a system that is riddled with bugs is just ridiculous. OTA updates were clearly planned, but have never materialized for some reason.

If you buy the subscription you do not need the DVD, just the DICE device. 2014d will not read a 2018 car without modification but 2015 will. There has been some works for a cracked version of 2015 but I don't see it coming soon. I believe some have gotten 2014d to read their 2017+ cars, it's somewhere in the forums here.
