The 2nd installment of "the minor problems with Nick's new '98 S70":

So the driver's side back power door lock doesn't work. The lock itself works but it has to be manually pulled up or pushed down. It's not triggered by the power door locks either with the key or the button on the driver's side door. What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Re: door lock/electrical problem... (silentnick)

You need a (new) door actuator/lock mechanism. There is NO other fix.
These fail quite regularly.
You can buy a used one (I just did) http://www.erievovo.com.
Labor is about an hour+, the door panel has to come apart

I checked Erie Volvo and they seem to be out. Are these car specific? There's someone selling them on eBay who claims that his are universal - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem

but other auctions specify the car. There are a few Volvo door lock actuators for sale but none for a '98 S70 GLT. Any idea how much they would run new from Autozone or Kragen, etc.?

thanks for the quick response by the way...

Nick

fcpgroton.com sells them for ~$100 a pop. It least right front lock runs at this price. OEM @dealers - twice the price
Not at all, dealer is about $140. ($100 wholesale to me). I would doubt that Groton's is OEM
You cannot use a "universal"

It's the entire lock- actuator assembly

Re: (JRL)

fcp lock is an OEM, even packed in the very same box.
Shoulda mentioned that $200 price from the dealer is in in our Great White North's dollars

. I know that fcp and dealer locks are identical, I bought one from the dealer and then obtained another one from FCP. Same thing, packed in Volvo box too. FCP fits well to my S70

thanks guys... at least now I know what's wrong...
Not a big deal, did one last week

Re: SIMILAR door lock problem (JRL)

Not to muddy the water on this topic, but want to be sure my fix would be the same as for silentnick.

My wife and I managed to screw up my V70's front passenger lock mechanism3 months ago when she yanked on the outside handle and I clicked the unlock button at exactly the same time. Ever since, the lock stem WILL go down when the lock button on door or fob is pushed, but WON"T go up when unlock on door or fob is pushed.

I figured that some link in the mechanism needed to be re-connected, requiring me to pull the door skin, etc. But this post would tell me that the mechanism is NOT fixable and must be replaced, to the tune of $100 + labor. Do I have any hope of fixing the lock link (since it works one direction but not the other) or does it look like I'm in the same boat as silentnick?

All helpful replies are welcome. TIA.

.
Probably, but you won't know until you pull the door now, will you?

Re: SIMILAR door lock problem (JRL)

Been There, Done that...

Got mine for 80 bucks from Power Volvo in LA.
These guys occasionally have something on Ebay,
but you can just call the 800 number, ask for parts
and they'll fix you right up.

1 800 976-8658

It's a combo unit with the latch, lock and light switch
all in one piece. Easy Swap.
I've also been told that the later OEM's are an improved
unit over the original. Just replace and don't look back.

Good Luck!

I actually realized something that might or might not change anything - I had previously thought that the power lock just didn't work at all. Now I realize that it will LOCK when I do the key thing on the driver's side door, it just won't UNLOCK. Does this change anything?

Also, my mechanic said it might be a grounding problem and that I should check that before replacing the actuator mechanism. any comments?

thanks again,
Nick

Re: (silentnick)

You are describing the same problem I had...
I could lock. but not unlock. Whether you use the
key or the switch should make no difference as they
are both just switches that operate the same door
lock relays. Get out your checkbook...

No, change the lock/actuator, as there is not (usually) any grounding problem. This is pretty straight forward
