Door gasket/weatherstrip

With 170k miles on the clock (and counting!) my R is still running strong...but with age and with use, rubber parts are simply starting to wear out. Current nuisance item is the foam rubber door gasket for the driver's door, which is finally starting to wear through in places after 12 years of open/close cycles.

Anyone have any tips on replacing this? I know this weatherstripping can be easily had in bulk with pre-applied adhesive, but I'm wondering if there's a particular size and profile folks on here have had luck with.

I would go oem or it will most likely leak. You can just pull them off by hand they are held on woth a little metal lip that the seal sits over.

You are taking about the inner most seal on the car itself right? The one that also runs down the side of the a pillar?

If you are talking about the strip on the caR, mine is jacked up too. The PO must have closed the door on the seatbelt and it wore it open. I found a used one but even that one was split open so it may be worth while to get a new one.

But yes, the seal on the caR rips right off but you have to remove the plastic threshold on the bottom to remove it fully.

I have not messed with the seal on the door so I can't speak on that.

Part 1 = $87

^#7 above is the culprit. All the other door seals seem to be in good order so far, but 7 is worn through to the hollow center near the door latch.

Seems a little silly to shell out $70 for OEM if, like with the BMW application pictured above, it's not even premolded. I was definitely wondering if anyone had luck using something off-the-shelf like this, or if the weatherstripping has a funny cross-section with no aftermarket equivalent.

Go OEM! It's worth $70 to avoid the frustration of the door not closing properly, water, air, noise leaks
If the NON OEM seal is not the right size, it will leak and be noisy on the Motorway. FWIW just get an OEM seal, you'll only replace it once.
It's on my list too - replace these on all for doors, OEM only. cheap insurance for next 10 years against leaks and wind noise.
My 06 Sonic Blue is just about to hit 100,000 k mi. Both of the drivers door weather strip is starting to wear out. The inner seal has chunks missing, the other one is growing bigger and bigger.

I have messed with cheap weatherstrip on other cars, and for me nothing but OEM on this particular part (unless some one knows who the OEM supplier to Volvo was on weatherstripping.)

If you take your time and clean and prep the new weatherstrip with a quality rubber product like Griots Garage rubber care/cleaner the new weather strip will last a long, long time. As long as you don't physically abrade the weather strip, it is usually drying out that kills the rubber weather strip. If you keep it protected with a rubber care product that keeps it from from drying out it will last a LONG, LONG time.

Lord have mercy, I was wondering if anyone had had success with non-OEM. I hear a resounding chorus of "don't know but don't risk it", which (while useful advice) isn't the same thing.
