If I burn a compilation disk on my home PC will these play in my new 2005 XC90? I am about to take delivery...
What is the preferred format for PC-made music for the XC90? MP3?

Thanks a lot!

The Volvo stereos only play Redbook Audio CDs. They play CDRs and CDRWs just fine, just make sure you burn a Redbook Audio Cd instead of just putting MP3 or WAV files onto a Data CD.

Soooo, what is the difference between a data CDR and music CDR?

I always thought it was a way to get you to pay more for the music CDR, never had an issue (before) with a Data, but based on what you folks say, I will not try one (data).

Anyone have an answer before we get our 90?

For most purposes, there is no real difference.

Music CDRs have a flag hardcoded so they can be used on some home CD recorders. CD recorders on PCs (or Macs) do not care about this flag.
Data CDRs do not have this flag set.

Either type can be used to duplicate audio CDs for playing on the XC90. If you burn copies, I suggest enabling CD-text so the track info can be displayed on the XC90's display.

Audio CD's burned using nero from downloaded mp3's play just fine

Yes, because it's a Redboot Audio CD. Nero and many other programs convert the MP3s to redbook audio (essentially, WAVs) before burning.

To clear up the terminology:

There are Data CD-R blank media and Music CD-R blanks. The difference was cited above by ig_mb. You pay more for the Music blanks because some money goes to record companies, who fear they'll lose their jobs if you copy some tunes.

Now comes the question of what you write to the disc. You can write files, which we sometimes refer to a data CD. Or you can write Red Book audio, which is identical to what comes from a record company.

The XC-90 accepts Red Book audio CDs, recorded on either Data or Music blank media. Whether you choose to pay more for the Music media is your choice.

You will usually have better luck by burning at a lower speed; fast burns are usually more difficult to read, and an audio player will often just interpolate over the errors. This causes noticeable noise, clicks, or short skips in the playback.

You will need to try with your computer's particular CD-R drive and your particular CD-R discs (I would advise against using CD-RW media). As has been reported with many makes of in-car CD decks, on SOME occasions, the in-car deck simply won't recognize the disc.

On our 2005 XC90 with premium sound (in-dash 6 disc changer), we have only had one compilation CD out of about 25 that did not read. I re-burned the same tracks again from iTunes, settings to Burning, Audio Disk (NOT MP-3 or Data CD), and Preferred Speed Maximum Possible, and it worked fine.

Sometimes bad media (disc) or errors if written to a particular disc "too fast" can lead to it being unreadable. The manual provides a standard/spec for the CD-R media, but with that one exception, we have used standard Memorex and Maxell CD-R discs with success.

I think you need to burn them as audio CD's and not MP3'

but that means you have a disc with 15-20 tunes, rather than 50+++, correct?

You are correct for all XC90s before MY07.

On MY07, the new CD player is capable of playing MP3 files burned as data files as well as the old audio CDs.

hmmm....is that reason enough to trade in my 04 for an 08???

nah, since we got the 04 via factory delivery, it would be very hard to part with it

I am trying to come up with a way to get more of my music into the XC90. I haven't been willing to go for an after-market iPod solution, yet.

My MY2009 XC90 with 6xCD changer plays normal audio CD, supports CD Text, and also plays MP3 CDs.
I burn them as data CDs, putting the files I want in the folder structures I want.
I also burn them from iTunes, it works fine.

As for the USB adapter you are referring to:
Post a link to it so we know what you are talking about
