does the torque mount get noisy when bad?

i've been chasing some clunking noises on my 07 S40 T5 M66 w/140k miles
started by replacing shocks, then discovered passenger axle had a torn boot so replaced that
noticed the passenger engine mount was blown so I tackled both left and right mounts (huge thanks for the DIYs here that made it a painless R&R)

the noise is now ~85% gone, at speed the car drives silent
but in stop and go and taking turns i'm still getting some slight clunking/rattling

i do not suspect it's the torque arm (connects torque mount to transmission), i called my local volvo dealer and they told me they've literally never ordered let alone stocked that part. forum browsing also suggest failures are exceedingly rare

so all i have left i can figure is the torque mount. do those make noise when theyre worn out? any other possibilities?

How are your control arm bushings? I just swapped out my front left LCA because I knew they're all shot; ran out of time to get the rest done but the smoothness in shifting has already improved 80% just by doing that one alone. Agreed that it's not likely the torque mount, but it's really easy to pull/inspect/replace.

Very simple.
You need to finish your stage 0
That includes changing all THREE motor mounts.
If the dogbone, lower mount is original I can guarantee that it's shot and when those two bushings are blown, they can make clunks.

by dogbone and lower mount are you referring to the torque arm and torque mount?

the torque arm (part 31304003) doesn't appear to have any bushings in it
the torque mount (part 9487349) does look like it'd cause excessive movement/noise when bad

What's the best replacement option for the torque mount? The new OEM one, or something like the focus mount?

There are a few available options. The efocus mount is a much stiffer oem design and then there's aftermarket solutions which are almost solid. Personally, I found that over time the NVH from even the efocus mount annoyed me so I installed a Mazda 3 mount. The M3 mount is a direct fit and is a bit more robust than oem volvo - I haven't found any real downsides yet. They can be had for very cheap on ebay, but there's a hiccup: you need the M3 bolt to mount. You can order a new bolt for something like $12 and then go wild with M3 mount options.

That's my plan -- or the Mazda3 (+ bolt) that Mercdude recommends. You can find the OEM/clones for pretty cheap.

I used the Ford E focus part for my torque mount, and I get some vibrations in the cockpit around 2100 RPM. Would recommend just the stock volvo part. It is a very easy swap.

Did you check you CV joints when you found the back axle boot? Those will make noise when they get some slop and you are going around turns. It will be most obvious when you are going slow in a parking lot turning sharp.
