Anyone apply vinyl wrapping to their car? If so was it difficult? Which brand of vinyl wrap did you use?

I want to blackout all the chrome but I've never applied vinyl wrap before so I don't know what to expect.

Thanks

I was going to tell you that Chris just did, but I think you already saw that in the other thread.

+1 i'm interested as well. My local tint shops won't do the vinyl, I have to go to a shop that does complete wraps I guess.

3M 1080 is what I used ordered from http://www.metrorestyling.com/ it shapes really well with heat. :) The window trim on the XC90 is fairly easy to do. Measure the rear window section and do it as one large piece to avoid making a seam. Measure the other trim, about 1.5" and 2.0", leave a little extra then use a little head to assist laying it down; using sharp X-Acto blade trim the excess.

Prep the surface, wipe it clean with isopropyl alcohol. I applied it dry, with out a lubricate, work the air bubbles and relief bubbles as you go.

The rails were a little trickier with a single piece, heat helps shape it around the edges and down.

I'm interested in some full shots of the whole ride. Looks great!

I ordered extra material:

Qty 2: 3M 1080 Scotchprint Gloss Black Vinyl Wrap - 5ft x 1ft (60in x 12in) (5 Sq/ft)
- used for the window trim

Qty 1: 3M 1080 Scotchprint Gloss Black Vinyl Wrap - 5ft x 12ft (60in x 144in) (60 Sq/ft)
- used for the roof rails and potentially the roof.

Chris,

How would this vinyl wrap, on the rails, stand to frequent use of load bars? Wouldn't it, eventually, get torn?

I'll find out this week, my cross bars are in. I think it may tear, which is why I am considering about an extra layer of black or some clear bra material where the bars mount. I may do a SkiGuard low profile box, similar to the one I had on the V60 and once the cross bars are aligned apply an extra layer of vinyl which would also help with remounting.

Its experimentation at this point.

You put this on dry?

I did my chrome on the XC60 except the rails on top. Wet. No way I'd have tried to do it dry.

Was the 3M vinyl glued on one side?

I love the 3M 1080, always have applied it dry after a good clay bar session/ wipe down with alcohol.

Make sure to get a plan for each panel. It's best to start with the roof, hood, and trunk lid first.

Try only to use heat to fix mistakes, and use soapy water when squeegeeing to prevent scratches.

Best tool I've ever used is knifeless tape, so much easier, safer, and more presentable than just using your knife.

Check out these videos, lots of good tips/tricks

And one specifically about chrome,
