Differences between the S60 turbo models

Hi all,

I'm looking at buying my first Volvo (been into modifying other Euro cars for years) for something different.

Specifically I am looking at buying a turbo S60 - something I can drive as a daily + do some modifications to make it a little faster / better looking.

My main question is what are the physical differences between all the turbo models? I realise they all have different power outputs but why is that so? I.e. why is a 2.3T less powerful than the T5? Do they have different turbochargers, different exhausts etc? End of the day I want to build a sleeper with around 300hp. From what I have read around the place its quite achievable, but I am unsure of which spec I should buy to begin with.

Another question is how hard is it to swap over to a manual transmission (for the 2001-2003 models)? I have my heart set on buying a S60 T5 manual (2001-2003) however they are exceedingly rare. T5's are quite common over here as automatics. I have done a a lot of reading regarding the strength of the auto's etc. I have converted a multitude of other cars from auto-manual so I understand you need the pedalbox etc etc - but how does the ECU cope?

Any suggestions or hints would be much appreciated.

Short answer:
B5234T 850 HPT 225hp
B5234T1 1997 850 T5 HPT 222 hp
B5234T3 1998-2000 T5 HPT 236 hp, 2001-02 C70 T5 236 hp, 2001-03 S60/V70 T5 247 hp
B5234T4 1997 850R HPT 250 hp
B5234T5 1997 850 T5R HPT 240 hp
B5234T6 1998 V70R HPT 236 hp
B5234T8 1998-99 V70R HPT 250 hp
B5234T9 2003-04 C70 HPT 246/242 hp
B5244T 2001-02 C70 LPT 190 hp
B5244T2 2000 V70R HPT 261 hp
B5244T3 2001-02 LPT 197 hp
B5244T5 2005-06 HPT 256/257 hp Dual VVT
B5244T7 2003-04 C70 LPT 200/197 hp
B5254T 1997-00 LPT 190 hp
B5254T2 2003- LPT 208 hp Dual VVT
B5254T3 2004- S40/V50 T5 HPT 218 hp
B5254T4 2004-07 S60R/V70R 300 hp Dual VVT

HPT (High Pressure Turbo) is the higher performance engine, has 8.5:1 compression
LPT (Low Pressure Turbo) is the standard engine most Volvo's have, has 9.0:1 compression

2.3T would be one of the very early 850 turbos, because most LPT turbos are 2.4L engines

The B5234T3 is the T5 engine, B5254T4 is the "R" car engine '04 to '07
B5234T8 are the engines from the '99 and '00 V70R cars that had either TDo4-18 or TD04-19 turbos.
B5244T5 and B5254T4 are the engines from '04 ('05 for T5) that have longer stroke, thicker head, and KKK turbocharger. Apparently in Germany, when they try to get maximum horsepower, they use the B5234T3 or B5244T5 blocks, and use the 93.2 mm stroke crank from the later engines, to get maximum power and avoid block cracking. These are 81mm bore blocks, the 83 mm bore blocks are susceptible to cracking at high power ratiings.

An LPT engine only has about 6-8 pounds of boost, HPT engines have about 10, sometimes more. An LPT can be made to perform like an HPT engine, but you need careful tuning. Usually means upgrading turbo from 13T, 14T or 15T to at least a 16T, and perhaps an 18T or 19T but it is an absolute necessity to have the ECU reflashed to accomodate the increased boost.

Putting in a manual is hard to do, until recently, it couldn't be done. Have to have a turbo engine to start, and then you have to reprogram the ECU to work with a manual transmission. ONLY person I know that can do the reprogramming is Lucky ad ARDIdeas.com, in Portland Oregon. You need to have the ECU reflashed, and do some rewiring to get the clutch pedal sensor working (having the entire pedal assembly from a manual car is a must). The Cruise control won't work without the ECU being reprogrammed, and I don't recall if you need to do some rewiring to even accomplish that. On a 850, it is relatively easy, but the new cars with CANBus systems are much harder to convert.

Whats tour budget?

My budget is around the $10-13k mark at this point.

Im in Australia, so the prices are probably a bit different. Generally a low KM S60 T5 auto will go for around the $9-10k mark. There is only 1 S60 T5 manual for sale at the moment that I can find (in the whole country) but its very high KM. I did find an 2004 S60 R for sale, but at $20k and being and automatic it's not really what I am looking for.

Thanks also for really good info on the different engines / LP and HP turbo. I assumed there would be physical differences - I thought it would be turbo size. Based on this I think I will aim for the T5 HP turbo - gives me a bit more freedom for future modifications.

Looks like the manual conversion will be in the too hard basket. I will hold out for a manual car to come up for sale.

My next problem will be finding a tuner in Australia who can do some remapping work (when I get a bigger turbo + other mods etc). I see there are some off the shelf 'flash' kits which will raise the HP (im guessing more aggressive tune + boost). Wonder if there is tuning software available which I can have a play around with....

Just FYI 01-02 are the worst years for the s60/v70 due to new product gremlins. Shop for 03 or newer if you can. That said, my 01 has been great but I've had the classic throttle body failure and a few other electrical gremlins too. If I didn't do my own wrenching it'd have cost me thousands in repairs.

BJ, ok, got it, well it will be great it you have the time to find a manual transmision, less problems and more turbo fun. About the Tune, ardideas.com will have soon the software and obd port so you can tune your car, also you can send the info to him and retune by internet.

For 13k why don't you get the best of everything, more power, awd, 6mt, big brakes and everything else the S60R comes with. Then you can save money and time and not source out 2 years worth of searching for all the lines, pedals, linkages, and whatever it'll take to get you a bare boned S60 into what you basically want [a SR]?

Read his post a R will cost about 20k.

Bj, a T5 is amazing car/engine combo and less maint. Parts than a aws, adjustable susp, etc, and you can get the same power or more than a moded R with the right parts and tune.

I would love to get a manual S60R. As you said its the best of both worlds. Unfortunately in Australia they are very rare. Even early ones (2004) are selling anywhere between $15-20k. Just trying to find a manual S60 anything is almost impossible, the market is saturated with automatics.

In some respects it would be good to get a T5 over the R - I like modifying cars almost more than driving them. If I buy the R model there will not be a whole lot to do.

Thanks for the tuning advice also. Looks like there are a multitude of optionas out there. The ARD looks the most interesting.... will be great if they can upload a tune over the OBD port.
