Cracked Windshield - Dealer or Safelite

So, sadly, while driving along the freeway, i got hit by a rock or some other object and cracked the windshield. In no time at all, the crack enlarged enough to not allow for any type of repair.

So my choices at this time are either dealer replace the windshield at $1800.00 or Safelite at $600.00. Unsure right now if insurance will cover, I have to call them.

My question is, is this something that a non-Volvo dealer can do, or is this a must by a dealer? my concern is that on the Safelite web site, it asks about lane departure and heads up, which tells me there is different glass and possibly different adjustments to the safety equip on the car. If the insurance pays, then no brainer go with dealer.

What says anyone with actual knowledge?

Hello I just replaced windshield on my mother's in law s90 2017 yes you need to only OEM glass 600$ price is for after market that will cause all the camera sensor not work. Safelite can order oem windshield for you will cost 1100 with install and then you need to go to the dealer to program the sensors that's about 150$ .Most insurances wont cover OEM glass.

In FL insurance has to cover it. Told USAA I wanted OEM for my C30, they checked it out, agreed and SafeLight came to my house and done in an hour. Now I have glass from Italy, Belgium and France. No charge, although I'm certain The Actuaries have rolled the cost into their Secret Formulas...YMMV.

Geico Doesn't care and dont cover OEM glass thats for sure unless you put the non -oem and it wont work 2x then they Maybe after all the yelling and screening will cover it.

Auto insurance is quite regulated, but if you are in the economic bracket that is driving a 90-series Volvo you probably shouldn't be buying your insurance from Geico, State Farm, Progressive, or Allstate unless you're willing to fight hard or pay a bit out of pocket for things like OEM parts.

Cut-rate insurance is generally not the best choice for people driving cars with a base price around or higher than $50k.

Policies targeting the high-value market have contract language such as "repair or replace the damaged or stolen parts with like kind and quality without application of depreciation" (AIG Private Client Group) or have similar language in marketing materials such as "We insist on Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts, which are designed to work seamlessly with your vehicle's highly specialized safety systems." (Chubb)

By contrast, GIECO uses what it calls "Competitive Auto Repair Parts" and describes as "Parts made by a company other than the manufacturer of the auto. All parts we authorize meet or exceed the quality of the manufacturer's parts, but cost less."

You get what you pay for.

Then what car insurance company you referring too not all states have same companies or even same coverage for the $. I dont mind paying more but if i know i get OEM parts or get paid if total loss every cent i deserve and not fight them for every cent. I dont think there is a company exist like that.

We're both in NJ. Here is a handful of companies that will do both OEM parts and either agreed value or replacement cost:

- AIG Private Client Group
- Chubb
- Cincinnati Group
- Nat Gen Premier
- PURE

Agreed Value coverage would mean that they agree to pay you based upon original purchase price less a set depreciation factor. Replacement Cost coverage essentially means they will replace the vehicle with a brand new vehicle of the same make, model, and equipment as long as the totaled vehicle is less than 3 years old.

Just wanted to comment on this. My local insurer, Mutual Of Enumclaw, automatically has OEM coverage built in to their auto policies. They will always try to replace with OEM parts, unless not available. I was originally told by my broker that this was going to be a small rider but turns out it's included.

Volvo windshield glass only.

I have seen too many issues with non Volvo glass. Such as missing rain sensor hole (renders rain sensing wipers inoperative) to I don't know what the exact reason but SPA cars will often get warning messages for collision avoidance systems because the cameras/radar in front of the mirror don't operate correctly behind aftermarket glass. Sometimes, even with Volvo glass, the camera and radar will have be recalibrated. This requires a technician drive your car with VIDA hooked up so that the camera and radar can get a sufficient number of counts to calibrate. In my experience, the road test normally will be about 15 miles or so.

Same here, spring for the auto glass coverage next time

I *just* got a rock chip/8" crack here in the DFW area, while I was following this thread. $1300 for glass plus labor here in the DFW area. Park Place Volvo's the only dealer that does it, others contract out to local talent or Safelite. I have a $1000 deductible, but switching insurers (Allstate to Safeco) at the end of the month. Would having that on my claims history be worth saving roughly $600? Not sure who can honestly answer that.

The companies I listed are national carriers, but you're absolutely right - many smaller carriers do offer OEM Parts endorsements.

Sorry for the extended time in my follow up. Been crazy busy.

My Insurance company covered the costs for Volvo glass and installation minus my deductible. I paid, and they sent me a check. i could have waited for the check had i chosen to wait the few extra days. Total dealer cost was 1797, parts, labor and tax. It did take a couple of days of working with the insurance, Statefarm, to work through the process, but in the end, all went well including the installation.

Dealer had someone come in for the install, which took about 90 minutes from start to end.

After my windshield was cracked by a rock after only 3 weeks of ownership, I opted for Safelite because I was curious if I'd run into issues given the complicated nature of these vehicles. They installed a non-OEM windshield and recalibrated my sensors in my driveway. I've been driving around for 2 weeks now with it, and it's no different. I have HUD and was concerned about what could go wrong, but it's been the same as the OEM.

You got lucky than or the non OEM glass was build better than before . I know a lot of people with xc90s with spa that had tons of issues with non-oem glass. The safety features didnt work right and kept giving errors.

A rock chip turned into and 12" long crack on the LHD side. I went with a local shop that replaced my front windshield and recalibrated ADAS for 700$ and tax. He used non-OEM glass. I believe it's Pinkerton.

The only issue I had is that he did not have enough snacks in the waiting room.
