Coolant level low, please stop safely

2015.5 V60, and just started getting this warning message. It comes up just for a few seconds while making right hand turns.
13k miles, and the coolant reservoir is full. I can only assume the sensor is going off as the coolant sloshes around while driving, but this had never been a problem in the past.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Happened on my '13, added coolant, monitoring the level, will bring it to dealer if it happens again. Curiously, it's also happened on our Lincoln MKZ. My Volvo owner's manual says "f necessary, top up the cooling system," and the Lincoln book has similar language. This language seems to imply that a bit of lost coolant is not necessarily a big deal.

Yup.

Topped it up with some distilled water; hasn't happened since.

+1 on my 2012.
It happened once early on so I took it to the dealer and they topped it off. I bought a gallon of coolant at the time just in case.
It happened again a couple of months ago so I mixed some up and topped it off.
In short, it might happen early on then every once in a great while. Nothing to worry about.

Mine does it too, same scenario. Will be looked at in 10k service.

The problem with the Volvo design is that it doesn't take much volume to get from max to min. Air bubbles in the system escaping over time is enough to trigger it. But I guess that's better than the other extreme. Our BMW recently gave the low coolant warning and it took 5 cups to bring it back. Not sure where all that went but it's been holding steady ever since. And I guess that's better then our Lexus IS250 which didn't even have a low coolant warning. Figured it was low when the heater would blow cold at stop lights, lol. Took a gallon to bring that back and sold it before we figured out where all that went.

I haven't had this issue, but it seems like a simple problem to have and resolve.
Unplug the lines on your coolant tank, and empty the liquid to be reused. Use a set of pliers to free the large clamp/hose. Pull out the coolant sensor at the bottom of the tank. Wipe it and reinsert. Everything else is the reversal. If this doesn't do the trick after a day, replace the sensor. Issue resolved. You could also unplug and plug back the sensor below the tank to ensure a snug fit.

Mine also had he exact warning yesterday?? It was fine after driving around for 15-minutes, the coolant level was at minimum line. Checked it tonight, and it was a bit lower than the minimum line, just top it up to the maximum line... will check if the issue reoccurs again.

This message just started popping up on our car too. Great tip on just adding some (distilled) water. But I'm curious, I tried to find antifreeze type in the manual, but it was not obvious to me what to use. Of course I see the "Volvo brand", but I suspect it's nothing special. What else can I use, if I find myself needing to add too much water (and want to maintain 50/50)?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

My car did the same thing. If you don't have access to the Volvo coolant then Pentosin Pentofrost NF should work. It has a number of Volvo approvals.

I got mine at Advance Auto Parts since my Volvo dealer was closed when I had the issue. You mix it 50/50 with distilled water before putting it in the car. I later asked my dealer if this was OK, and they agreed that it was.

The difference between MIN and MAX on these cars is really small, but I would not dilute the coolant in the car with water unless I planned to change the coolant very soon.

You could have an air bubble in your system, which creates your coolant just on that threshhold of low/normal level coolant. Just top it up, you'll be fine
