Can you turn off auto-braking?

I know several of the safety functions can be turned off by swiping left on the touch screen. Do you know if auto braking is one of those? It seems like a feature that would be troublesome if it over-reacts. Thanks so much! I'm sorry for all of my questions.

The demo that you mentioned was of the pedestrian detection feature. The problems with the demo - First off, the XC60 that they were using DID NOT have the Technology Package / Platinum Trim Level which includes the ped detection system. How do I know? The XC60's with the Tech Package have a distinct rectangular cover in the grill. Secondly - The whole concept of the ped. detection system is if you are below a specific speed, and not actively steering or braking to avoid hitting someone. Lastly, I don't care what brand you are demonstrating - why the hell would you stand in front of a moving vehicle??!! I love my Volvo, and I trust that it will help me out in an emergency the best it can with the safety features it has. However, I would never put a person's life at risk like those idiots did!!!

Sorry to rant, I just can't believe how many news outlets picked up on a factually incorrect incident!!!

City Safety can be disabled, yes. The safely systems are designed to stop operating if there is a problem detected in the system. You would get a message on the dash that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. It wouldn't go haywire on you!

I was worried about this before I got the car because doing things like driving in NYC and merging into tunnel traffic where it goes from 15 lanes to 2 lanes for example can be a long, knary process not for the feint of heart. Cars and buses will give within a few inches of your car in the regular course. I've been limited in my trips into the city with it, mostly using my old car still.

I did have the auto stop over-react once though, so I do think this can happen. The audible warning came so close to the braking that for all intents and purposes it was simultaneous. All that was happening was a person in front of me was turning into their driveway on a country road with no other traffic and I was going round them. I was not usually close. But it freaked out and forced brake me anyway.

I assume it's relative to speed and I was in the process of arcing around the car so by the time it did it there would have been a partial overlap between one side of the front of my car and the rear opposite side of the turning car. But there was going to be time for the arc to complete without a collision, even if the other car didn't continue to move in the opposite direction into its driveway, and with it doing that there was room to spare.
