I have always been curious. What does a stage 1, 2, or 3 consist of, are there particular parts associated with each stage? Does it vary with each company? What are the expected gains for the respective stages? Not sure if this has already been brought up or not, if so I apologize in advance.

Stage 0 = Replace Spark plugs, Wires, oils, filters etc.
Stage 1 = ECU maybe a intake
Stage 2 = 3in downpipe and catback , FMIC
Stage 3 = FORGED Engine 500HP + volvo haha
That is what i think not sure haha

I always thought of it as:
Stage 0 = Return to new-from-the-factory conditions. All maintenance and wear items.
Stage 1 = Tune with an optional intake.
Stage 2 = Full exhaust with tune
Stage 3 = Full exhaust, turbo upgrade with tune. Can also have peripherals such as FMIC, meth, etc.

there are some variations with each company. On Saabs you can get Stage 1 horsepower on just a tune that other makes you'd have to go stage 2 parts to get.

When I hear my car is stage 3 etc.. etc.. I think.... That person has no idea about cars.
I too hate that generic terminology, spoken as if there is some universal standard. I've got some suspension mods and 3" DP, but no tune & the powertrain is otherwise stock. What stage is that?

Plus, I keep up on the maintenance regularly, so my car is in a constant state of 'stage zero'

really not sure where you are going with that comment. There are MANY companies today that use the stage terminology. Even Roush sells you Stage 1, 2, etc Mustangs. So if I see someone with a Roush Mustang I will ask him what stage is it and if he knows ANYTHING about his car he will say "Its a Roush Stage 1"

Generically speaking stages bracket a certain amount of mods someone has done to their car. It brings some normalization to an otherwise unorganized aftermarket modding community. No, stage 1 doesn't mean same make to make, or even model to model, but it provides a reference point.

Stage # is just a marketing decision made by each aftermarket parts company.

Unfortunately it is oftentimes used to upsell highly profitable parts to the uninformed by packaging them with widely regarded high value / low margin parts. Not much different than vehicle option packages, except that in this case the consumer can pick and choose the individual pieces, and, there is rarely a large discount for buying a stage package.

It was my understanding the Stage # was in reference to THAT specific cars increase in overall performance. So a Stage 1 doesn't really mean you have to have X, Y, Z parts, but it means that your car is capable of X sec 1/4 or Y 0-60. The parts you need to get to that next level could be any combination of what's already been stated above.

OP, where in VA you located?

I won a Stage 1 tune from Shark Performance at an event a few months ago and what they did was increase the boost to 18psi and tune the 4C chassis settings to have the aggressive throttle response like the Advanced setting. The only thing that I have done to my car is the RKelly intake system with a K&N air filter in the factory box. For reference here is a link to their website that lists the Stage 2-4 required upgrades. You will have to select the manufacturer (Volvo) and then S60 P2 and scroll down to the list.

I was just listing this as a source for the differences between the stage upgrades not as a "BIBLE" for tunes and HP/Torque numbers.

The only universal (company-independent) classification is stage 0 - all wear and tear parts are in solid working condition. Everything else is vendor specific and will usually require more than a two word description.

I.E. telling someone that you have a stage 2 tune on your S60R doesn't say much but prefacing it with a vendor name will tell them what package/tune you purchased from that vendor. You'll still have to fill them in on what parts(if any) you purchased in addition to those recommended to support the tune if you want to give a clear description of your set up.
