Can I remove head unit (HU-650) without removing the shift knob (geartronic)?

I just got a Grom and I'm super excited to install it in my '09 S60 2.5T AWD. I went to install it today but ran into a problem. I disconnected the battery, put the car into drive, then pulled up the trim around the shift knob. I removed the 2 Torx screws at the bottom of the radio (and of course I dropped one behind the radio), and got the radio/climate control unit loose. I was able to get it partially out but wasn't able to get it further out since it hits the shift knob. Eventually I gave up and put the radio back in since I had some other stuff to do and couldn't spend more time figuring it out. Do I need to remove the shift knob (and how do I do it), or is there a way to get the head unit out without removing it?

Yes. Just shift it all the way back before disconnecting the battery.

It's a tight fit, IIRC. It's not difficult to get the shifter knob off. Just pull straight up and don't hit yourself in the face when it comes loose!

Okay stupid question, but I'm about to try again and just want to clarify. Do I remove the climate control part separately from the radio? Or does the entire unit come out as one?
Climate control is a separate unit. 2 screws along the bottom, pull from the bottom and lean it out bottom first. Disconnect the 2 green connectors on back, plus the 2-wire plug to the cigarette lighter. Then its out.

For the head unit, its another 2 screws along the bottom edge, then pull forward from the tangs sticking out the bottom of the head unit. Might take some tugging, but you wont damage anything. It will come right out if you pull forward from the bottom.

Also, disconnect the battery before you unhook the CCM. Otherwise, you'll get an SRS error that requires VIDA to clear.

Oh yeah I did that. I also didn't bother removing the shift knob, I just put it into manual mode which gave me just enough room to slide the head unit out

Too late to this post, but I had the same problem.

Car on, shifter to drive (or lowest position), Car off

E-BRAKE! (So you dont hit anything when you start it again)

Battery disconnect. Key wont come out while in drive.

Carefully pry up shifter trim.

(This is the answer to OP question)
After shifter trim is loose you can turn it about 45-70 degrees either way. I think I went left.

2 Torx bits at the base of the head/climate unit. Carefully pry out around all of the trim.

The whole piece comes out as one unit.
(six screws on back, a few connectors, and you take the trim off first via push clips)

Reverse order to get it back together. Getting the "unit" sit right is tough. Push in, then up. Make sure wires aren't blocking the unit to sit correctly.
