Brake Replacement Cost

My local indy dealer told me that I need to replace my brakes and rotors. His estimate is around $1,000. Is this accurate? Also, is there any way to get rid of the 50K maintenance light without going to the dealer and spending upwards of $5K to get this done?

Oh wow, that's awesome, even easier than our 2010 XC90. Man I just wish other makes made it as easy. Porsche makes it super expensive (either you have to be a third party tool ($400) or you take it to the shop and pay $200/hr (some dealer will charge full hour to do it unless you pay up for the full service). I've had it on for a few years now. Love Volvo for their customer friendliness on this.

Please out the name of your local stealership for this utter nonsense. FYI, even at $100/hour that some Indies charge, front and rear rotors should NOT take more than 2 hours.

Sorry, it's not a dealer, it's a local (NY) indy shop. He's never done me wrong before, but I'm curious on what is a reasonable charge?

(I am by no means equipped to do any kind of brake work myself)

Here we go again. Comparing OEM parts prices to cheap aftermarket prices, prices to pay someone to do labor vs. doing it yourself and acting like its all apples to apples.

What parts is he using? Front and rear or just one axle? What is the shop labor rate?

And where are you getting a quote of $5k for a 50k service?

For those of you asking for more details - all 4 wheels, not using OEM, it's an indy shop outside NYC and I'm not sure what the labor rate is. I've asked around and $1,000 doesn't seem unreasonable.

It doesn't seem unreasonable. If you start comparing it to what it costs to do it yourself or comparing the cost to how long it takes a professional to do it, then there will be people here who think it is unreasonable.

Related but tangential....I saw something about 2020 models gets different brakes or something. Anybody know if it’s expected to improve longevity? Seems like pre-2020, people have complained the xc90 chews through brakes.

Yeah, that's what I've read here on the forum. Our 2017's had front rotors done once under warranty at around 25k miles for bad pulsating. But the pads were fine, even though I disagreed with rotors being replaced without pads. Pulsating returned with a vengeance at higher speeds and braking. Had all four (pads and rotors) replaced at 52k miles. So we never experienced the excessive wearing of brake pads that others have seen. With 72k miles on it, visual inspection seems like the replaced pads have tons of life left.
