Brake pedal sticking before starting

About 50% of the time that I attempt to start my car, the brake pedal sticks - I have to lift my foot off of it and press hard to finally engage the brake - and finally start the car. Anyone else experiencing this on their 2022 and newer XC60s? I'll have service look into this - but I'm concerned it will be hit or miss on whether they can replicate it.

happens to me as well, very unnerving especially since I really only feel it AFTER I put it in drive and brake for the first time.
It's more like 15% of the time for me, though.

Same here. Has happened on 2 2023 XC60s (1 a loaner regular XC60 and the other my new T8 Recharge). I'd say it's 10% of the time for me. Still trying to find a pattern. I generally now try to make sure I get in and press the brake pedal at least twice before turning the car on, which seems to stop it from happening.

This happens to me in my 23 XC60 as well. Sometimes when I get in, the brake pedal feels like it is up against a wall (very stiff feel) and I can barely depress the pedal. Most of the time the brake pedal feel softens up after I start the ignition (as expected). On some occasions, the pedal stays stiff after start up and after I put the vehicle into gear. Not until after I fully remove my foot from the pedal does the pedal get soft and feel normal again...Pretty annoying when I get in, put it in reverse and try to ride the brakes in reverse only to find out that I can barely stop the vehicle because the pedal is so stiff. In this situation I need to quickly remove my foot from the pedal while in gear in order for the pedal to feel normal again, which isn't ideal.

This same thing is happening on my 2020. Just started a few weeks ago. Intermittent so having the same concern that the dealer will say “well we can’t replicate it.”

happens when I try to start the car. Foot on brake, twist the start knob and nothing. First few times it happened I wondered if my key fob was with me! Then also wondered if the battery was weak. But removing my foot off the pedal and pressing again “fixes” it.
Odd that if 22+ is brake by wire and earlier models are not that we’d share this issue?
And ARE 22+ brake by wire and 18-21 are not? I didn’t think they made substantive changes like that in the middle of a model lifecycle? Sounds like a big change to me, but what do I know? 😜

Mine does it...rarely - but does it. Honestly feel like it's electronic/software related on start. It usually makes a funky noise. I shut the car off and restart and it depresses normally after that. Something has just failed to boot.

In my '21 I get the hard brake pedal the first time I start the car after having not started it for 2-3 days. The car does start on the first try but it just feels like the pedal does not even move.

We have the same problem with a 2021 XC60 B6. Volvo Netherlands and Sweden know about this problem, but there are not enough reports yet to issue a recall. With us it's so bad that sometimes he doesn't brake afterwards. hope more people will report it. or that something goes wrong with not braking.

Agreed, not sure if it is temp related. Happened to me two days ago (has been at least a month and a half since it happened last). As I put my foot on the brake to start the car it had that weird feeling but luckily was prepared and quickly took my foot off and lightly pumped and I was able to get it to go back to normal.
Does anyone know if there is a bulletin on this issue?

Just a quick update. Was at the dealer today, told them about this issue, they were aware of it and are in contact with Volvo to get an official software update for this (unknown of when that's going to happen). Even the valet person there knew exactly what I was talking about.

Apparently they gave a loaner to somebody and they refused to drive it, said "the brakes don't work" 😆

This is good news. Hilarious about that loaner.

I’m having the exact same issue with my 2023 xc60 plus model. The issue isn’t consistent and when it does happen it’s concerning because I can sometime feel the car slowly backing while the gear is switched into reverse and my foot still on the brake. I have to pump the breaks for the pedal to go back to normal from the mid stiff position. I always use the parking break before shutting off the car and was wondering if it’s not disengaging properly or something. I took the car to the dealer and they couldn’t replicate it and Volvo Canada told them to do a software reinstallation but that didn’t fix the issue.

UPDATE 1 - BCM2 (Brake Control Module) is being replaced. Will update after I get my car back and drive a bit.

This has happened to me in my '23 XC60 Recharge over 25 times in 6 months. It happened during warm weather, hot weather and cold weather. It happened backing out of my garage onto a sloped driveway, out of a garage onto a flat driveway and in parking lots. The dealer had been unable to replicate it the 2 times I took it in. It happened on a XC40 loaner as well. Last week I needed 10K service, so I asked them to look at it again. They opened a case with Volvo and are replacing a part when it comes in this week or next. I can't remember the part, but will update when I get my car back. Otherwise, I love the Recharge.

Speed Test
only had it a week (it's a 6 month old ex dealer demo).....I thought it was just the servo being empty or something, it does feel very stiff to start with

This just happened to me last night on my XC40 2021 AWD T4. Went to turn on the car and it didn't start, I was confused as to what I was doing wrong or what could be wrong with the car. Only after releasing the brake and pressing again I noticed how stiff it was. Had to lift my foot and try again with a little more force for it to register the brake and finally turned on. Got a date with the dealer to fix the HVAC, let's see what they say about it.

Just had the car serviced and they did a software update. Said the 2020 was also drive by wire so we will see.

Mine‘s doing it more frequently too. First started a few months ago and I haven’t yet taken it in. Will be doing that here soon..
