I would too. Very, very happy. Well, as long as they didn't price Volvos like BMW's.

Unfortunately it sounds from the article like it's no longer a consideration. Hard to tell, as they don't say either way, but from the tense and tone of the writing, sounds like the plan bit the dust.

Having been a rep for BOTH BMW and Volvo....I would rather see Volvo AB buy back Volvo Cars and then buy BMW!!!! Then co-ordinate that with Volvo's takeover of Nissan Trucks....which would insure that Volvo makes the $$ profits...not BMW!
The one thing that would concern me is that BMW builds NONE of it's own components. They design the systems, then contract everything out to vendors, then bring everything back to a final assembly plant. At least Volvo does manufacture some of their own components.
Plus....BMW might be highly motivated to expand it's US assembly operations....which would again concern me.....in that it may have a negative impact on the Overseas Delivery Program....to which I am both emotionally and financially tied to!

Leaving Ford would not bother me...although, I don't have any real complaints with the way Ford has treated Volvo....

reading that article BMW would not continue production of volvo models that compete with BMW products... no S60 ever again probably

But that's the beauty........Volvo doesn't compete with BMW (at least not in an obvious fashion). If the S40 competes against the 3er, does the S60 compete against the 5er or also the 3er. If the S60 competes with the 5er, does the S80 compete with the 7er or also the 5er? I have a headache now.

I always thought the S60 competed with the 3 and the 80 with the 5 but i think the new 80 is a bit above the 5...

but i guess you are right - the volvos are sort of "inbetween" for people that dont want to make the leap.

Well the first thing I thought after reading that was BMW could drop their AWD models and focus on RWD.
Volvo could then focus on FWD and AWD at the lower price range.

But yeah, it sounds like it was just a thought for BMW.

And what engine would they use? Would Volvos have BMW engines then? And BMW suspensions? Then that would be a bit iffy. And since BMW is all about the sport sedan, well you can be sure that the R would be gone permanently and any potential sporting pretensions Volvo has would be gone too. I really don't think it will happen.

But imagine for a second... the next gen S60 T6 with a 2.5L Valvetronic twin-turbo I5 mated to a SMG transmission with an optional R sport suspension package, active roll bars, and RWD-biased xDrive AWD system, tested on the Nurburgring. And at current S60 prices with an automatic $3000 discount, plus loyalty discount, because sales are so slow... I think I can live with that.

Great.

THe bmw's are really not overpriced.

Look at the 335i compared to the s60? 50k loaded for both.

I agree that bmw's are much better rear wheel drive and volvo's are great awd.

Ford is sinking fast and bmw is very well off.

Imagine an inline 6 twin turbo s60R

s60 is same size as 3' but Volvo has more powerfull engines (excluding R and M, both are other market)
new s80 is ­± same as 5'
Volvo has no 7' competitor
xc90 is larger than x5 (and new X5 is also a small car

Intake valvetronic from BMW is just a big joke ... the single-throttlehouse from Volvo rules!!!

the turbo's BMW use on their diesel are crap ... the mitsu's Volvo use rul e and can't break (the KKK seems also strong).

The electric in BMW are worser than the worst Italian joke you can think of about this ... and I mean ALL electric parts: lights, combi's, radio's , nav-systems , sensors (ABS, camshaft,....)

I like Volvo precisely because it's not BMW.

The pompous and arrogance stigma that is associated with the brand and BMM ownership is not something I comprehend or want to be part of.

Volvo is practical. The car design is purposeful. Volvo offers a good quality product that offers luxury above more pedestrian brands without taking it to the look at me I drive a _______ stigma.

I wouldn't be interested in buying a product from this merger. Too much overlap in product and I think the Volvoness would be lost in the mix.

A helluva lot better than Volvo loosing its Volvoness to Ford products (at least US-sourced Ford's).

I would say the S80 is definitely above the 5, but below a 7 in terms of (market/price/size) position.

I would say the XC90 competes directly with the X5, but it's larger size is it's competitive advantage.
