Best Oil for S60 Drive-E

My next oil change is not far and I need to make the choice.. I'm not sure between 0W-20 RBS0-2AE and 5W-30

0W-20 RBS0-2AE oil was designed by Volvo specifically for the Drive-E Engines, since this oil is not available in the US market, Volvo dealerships uses the 5W-30 on those cars instead, it's not any regular full SAE 0W-20.. it has to meet the Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE.

I have S60 Drive-E (Turbo 2.0L 4Cyl) and I live in a humid mountain area.

my options list includes:

0W-20 Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE (Oil made specifically for Volvo Drive-E) [NOT FOR 5 OR 6 CYL S60]
---------
Castrol Edge Professional V 0W-20 (Rare in the US Market)
Liqui Moly Special Tec V SAE 0W-20 (Available in the US Market-Imported)
TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 V DRIVE 0W-20 FOR VOLVO DRIVE E (Rare in the US Market)
ROWE HIGHTEC SYNT RSV SAE 0W-20 (N\A)
Shell Helix Ultra Professional AS-L 0w-20 (N\A)

5W-30
--------
Castrol EDGE [SPT] 5W30
Castrol EDGE Professional A5 5W30
Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W30
Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W30

TONYJAG-
Our dealer found the following in their Volvo diagnostic system under the design and function section:
"Oil system - General
The engines from the VEA family have an oil system with a variable oil pump, piston cooling and oil level sensor. Service intervals are 30,000km/one year (market dependent). The engine oil used is a fully synthetic oil with SAE 0W20 viscosity with designation VCC RBS0-2AE. The oil, which is specially developed for Volvo, must be used in all markets. The exception is the USA where, due to legal requirements on the market, ACEA A5/B5 5W30 is used. In order to optimize the engine's internal friction, the lubrication system has a fully variable oil pump. The oil pump's variable displacement contributes to reduced fuel consumption. None of the engines in the VEA family have a dipstick."

UPDATE 01/03/2019
-------------------------
Thank you for contacting Volvo Cars USA. I hope your day is going well. 5W-30 is recommended in the United States over 0W-20 due to the fact that 5W-30 is easier to locate in the United States than 0W-20. Hope this helped, thank you.

About to change my oil for the first time on the V60 and ordered some Castrol Edge Professional 5w-30 off eBay (can't find it in stores and ordering was cheaper than buying from dealer). Extreme driving conditions, per the manual, appear to be conditions below -22F. I live in Florida so I'm definitely not getting "extreme". I assume the recommendation of 0W-20 for 4cyl. engines in extreme driving conditions references the same chart.

Castrol Edge synthetic is available on Amazon for $25 (5 qt). I just bought some Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for even cheaper ($23) and put in for the $10 rebate. Both are A5/B5.

here's the bigger picture, for 4cyl 2.0 Drive-E the recommended oil is 0w20 that meets Volvo standard VCC RBS0-2AE
so thats (Castrol EDGE Professional V 0W-20) which does not seem to be available in the US.
Attachment isn't showing but I'm only seeing that 0w20 is recommended for extreme driving conditions. I believe 5w30 applies for normal driving conditions.

While doing the research I found this post by user (TonyJag) about 0W20 being the original oil for Drive-E cars:

"Our dealer found the following in their Volvo diagnostic system under the design and function section:
"Oil system - General

The 0W-30 oil will flow better and very low temperatures, but does not offer any benefits at normal or high temperatures. From this, I conclude that when Volvo says "extreme engine operation", they mean "extremely COLD operating conditions (i.e., Arctic conditions).

For those of us in the lower 48 ststes, 5W-30 is just fine (as long as it meets the ACEA A5/B5 requirements). There's much more to it than just the viscosity grade.

While compiling a list of RBSO-2AE certified oils that can easily be acquired here in the states I came across this kit from FCP using LiquiMoly's Volvo approved 0W-20 (5L plus 1L) + filter + drain plug washer for a price that seems unbeatable and free shipping. Will definitely be doing this for my next oil change (I wish I found that before I did my oil change last week!). This was a good thread, thanks for starting it VolvJoe!

Actualy it's cheaper on CARID you get 2X 5L bottles for $60 (4-6$ shipping).. but no oil filter tho.. silly question is the oil-filter diffrent if using 0w20 than 5w30? or any oil-filter would do?

And you're welcome! I can't wait to see that 4-6% better fuel economy haha (and maybe also a slight performance increase!).. I changed my car oil recently too.. I wish I found about it before but definitly doing 0W20 for my next oil change.. I will keep my eyes open for any coupons for those european parts websites so we can use it towards that oil.

So I got the answer for my email from Volvo

Hello Joseph,

Thank you for contacting Volvo Cars USA. I hope your day is going well. 5W-30 is recommended in the United States over 0W-20 due to the fact that 5W-30 is easier to locate in the United States than 0W-20. Hope this helped, thank you.

Im from Poland and this oil we have in my country

My s60 T5 2.0 245HP 2015 year Drive-E
Is from US
Sorry I didn't understand you correctly, are you saying that you purchased your Volvo in the US and you're now using it in Poland? if this is the case it would be better\and maybe also cheaper for you to go with the 0W20 RBS0-2AE since it's available in the european market.

#54 · (Edited)
That's correct and Volvo on it's US version of it's User-Manual do recommend the 5 and 6Cyl S60 to use 0W30 for Extreme driving conditions (Artic temps, Towing, Racing, ...).
But for the global market again it only recommends the 0W20 RBS0-2AE oil even for the Polestar!

All that made me come to conclusion that the RBS0-2AE certifications might means Volvo Engineers played with the oil charachertistics and specs to have the protection of 5W-30 and operating Tempratures of 0W40, same case with some Audi and BMW OEM certified oils they were talking about the same on bobistheoilguy.com forums.(Oil talks forums)
Also they were talking about the RBS0-2AE oil specs (Vis.Index,Oil Flash Point,...long spreadsheet with many numbers) and how that oil is in a hybrid category between 5W-30 and 0W30.

Not a T5 guy but I run Motul in my T6 RD.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004LEYIHW/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

It's an ester oil, you can read about this type of oil on your own if you choose but bottom line it works very well in turbocharged cars as it can withstand much higher temperatures without flashing.

Honestly though, pennzoils natural gas platnium synthetic was my go-to for many years and I would have no qualms about running it now.

Side note. For anyone questioning their oil choice, get a Blackstone test kit.

I send a sample off to Blackstone every oil change because 1. I think it's interesting and 2. They will tell you if you should change sooner / later / different grade , etc...

Just my 0.02.

I was reading about the S60 Notorious Piston rings and knocking problem and saw this post by mudshark:

"
I had Polestar software installed in November 2017, a month after my second annual service at 15.5K miles (Yes, I’m a low mileage driver). Prior to p*, I had heard 3 clicking events. Post p*, I logged another 26 events in 6 months. In my case, p* would seem to be a contributing factor.

I documented a clicking event on video and shared it with my service manager and one of his techs. They in turn passed the video on to the Volvo service help desk. The answer came back, switch from 5W-30 oil to 0W-20.

In the 2 ½ weeks and 450 miles since the oil change, I’ve tried my best to induce the clicking in all the usual spots where it would occur, to no avail. At this point, I’m cautiously optimistic my problem is solved, but I’ll need more time and miles to be thoroughly convinced.

My dealer had to hunt for Castrol Edge Pro V 0W-20 as he didn’t stock it and neither did his distributor, but that’s what the service help desk specified. I can’t speculate if the LiquiMoly Special Tec V 0W-20 would have the same magical results, but at least it’s readily available on the internet. And remember, Volvo oil spec VCC RBS0-2AE/SAE 0W20 is for 4 cylinder engines only…"

You seem to be trying to convince yourself and others to use it . Just use it and see how it works . I have zero faith in what Volvo engineer's and dealers say . If Volvo was so smart they wouldn't be putting out such junk year after year .
