Best Current Volvo Engine?

It's poll season, so just wondering, what's your favourite current Volvo engine at the moment?

I've heard the 2.5T is simply superb and apparently quite a bit better than the 2.4T which I found to be a nice engine too. Any major differences between the two?

From what I can gather, the 2.5T is the pick of the range, torque anywhere you want it, next to no lag, excellent performance and similar fuel consumption to the 2.4T. How's the refinement? Does the FWD version feel noticeably faster than the AWD car?

I enjoyed the T6, I thought it sounded great and had the performance to match.

From what I hear, despite the great torque characteristics, the R seems to suffer from a bit of lag, thanks to the huge turbo it employs and the fact it couldn't have a twin turbo due to limited underbonnet space.

D5 is supposed to be great and it's Volvo's first car attempt at a diesel engine.

The 4 cylinder motors seem a bit ordinary and boring compared to the 5 cylinders, but the T4 packs a punch. I drove a 2.0T (4 cyl), but I found the 2.4 20V preferable.

If you wanted to vote for the 1.6 16V, 1.8 16V or 1.8 GDi, sorry, there's only space for 10 engines

So, what's your opinion?

Cheers,

It is THE best engine that Volvo offers right now...faster, quieter and same gas mileage!

Not really.

Is there much of a difference between the 2.4T & 2.5T - I haven't driven the 2.5T yet, but I've tried a few 2.4T cars (S60AWD & V70XC)?

It seems like a great engine, especially in non XC90 applications where it doesn't need to push so much weight.

Yes, you can tell that there is significant difference especially right off the line. It is also quieter adn pulls much stronger in 2nd and 3rd gears...I love that engine and, mind you, this comes from someone who swears by the T5 engine!

I agree, the D5 is a great diesel engine. Those 340nm from 1700rpm are soooo sweet. Not to mention the milage. Acceleration you say? Well ok, the diesel power plant is not the racers first choice. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

is it just me or does a lot of mag notice the new 300 hp 2.5T runs out of steam at the top of it's rpm range?

Hmmm...I had fun, both with an auto and a 6-speed, all the way up to 125....both cars felt like they had plenty more pleasure to give!

I'm voting the T-6 because it was the nicest Vo motor that I've spent a little time with. Not sure if it is the most reliable, it isn't 300HP like the new R but it worked very very well. It seemed better than the standard 2.3L T 5-cyl. motor IMO. The S80 T-6 is dreamy.
Maybe if I drive the new R someday I'll change my mind!

Yes it does, not really out of steam but it feels like it is limited one way or the other.
There's so much happening at lower revs that the high revs are disappointing, more an LPT like character.

Yup D5 for me...

I have only 500 miles on now, but it just gets better every day/hour/minute the more I open her up.

I want to record the sound from within the cabin - it has a wonderful growl - I'll see if I can record it and post it here so everyone can hear.

As for the torque - bags of it from 1700rpm - and more than a T5.

I just luv it..

Check out the specs on the engine--as a turbo it is designed to be operated in the maximum torque range. It has next to no torque/power below 1900 rpm and develops its maximum power at a relatively low rpm. So keep it at at least 2000 rpm and don't waste your time or the engine's internals revving it above 5,500 rpm because you won't be gaining any torque or power. So compared to many other (especially non-turbo) engines, it has a narrow operating range and less benefit from winding the revs way up. But it has maximum and consistent torque from way lower rpms through the whole normal operating range, which lots of other cars would dearly benefit from.

Re: Best Current Volvo Engine? (Marc R Collins)

I'm a 2.5T owner so it's very exciting that it's at the top of this poll, but it just occured to me that this poll is really a popularity contest. In other words, more people here probably own the 2.5T than the R. If there were equal numbers of owners or if this poll was done in a more objective fashion the "R" may be the winner. I'm not putting this poll down, not at all...it's just an observation and thought it would be worth others keeping this in mind too as they read the results.....Still very good information in this thread and interesting results from the polling.

Actually, I think quite the opposite might be true. The 2.5T is Volvo's newest offering, but there is a very large amount of 2.4T's, T5's, and other venerable model engines running around. Remember the T5 has a history that dates back to 1993 in the 850 Turbo. This question resorts to asking people what they think is the best Volvo engine.

I personally like the T6 & T5 applications in the S80 and S60 respectively. If I were buying a new Volvo today, those would be my picks, but I still think that the 2.5T is the best all-around engine that Volvo makes. Its output characteristics, economy, power, silence, and response all contribute to that.

all those engines are OK, but the best volvo engine is the V6 in the Volvo 960/S90.....when it is twin-turboed + supercharged! Why did volvo stray from RWD?

RWD did not sell well for Volvo and it was the smartest thing they did. Otherwise, they would be dead by now.

BTW, "Spetsnaz"? As in the Special Ops unit from the U.S.S.R?

You mean Inline-6, not V6.

Actually, I love the I6 in my 960, plus the fact that it is RWD makes it even sweeter. The problem is Volvo never made a factor twin-turbo or supercharged application of the I6 + RWD layout.

RWD did them pretty well in the 240 and 740, I'd say. I would imagine it was the cost factor more than anything that made them switch, back when everyone else was doing it too.

Now that people are realizing how much better RWD is many ways, and flocking to BMWs and Benzes, RWD is becoming popular again. Chrysler is switching back to it. I wonder if Volvo will follow suit?

Back to the topic, I now have just over 1000kms on my new 2.5TAWD V70 MT. My comparison is with my ph.1 T4 s40.

No discernible turbo lag with the 2.5. Great noise. Very smooth. In gear acceleration on autoroute good (100-180), but dramatically slower than T4 (to be expected - engines of similar output in vehicles with about 400kgs difference in weight). Torque seems acceptable, but clearly comes in higher than the T4. Gearbox has freed up noticeably.

Nothing new software won't fix.
