Battery - Original or replacement?

Just purchased a 2007 S60 with 73,000 miles. The car has a Volvo battery in it. How do I tell if this is the original battery that was in the new car or a replacement Volvo battery? If it is the original, I will probably replace it.

I'm not sure there's a way to tell if it's the original battery that came in it originally. If you have any doubts with its capacity or starting ability, go to the local parts store and have them test it real quick. If it is indeed the original battery, I would imagine it would show up in the tests due to age (9 years is a long ass time for a battery)

With respect, I disagree. I used to be a tech at a Volvo dealer (only recently did I stop working there). The warranty on the "Volvo" branded battery is rubbish. Get one from Costco if you have a membership there, the warranty is 42 month free replacement, you can literally tell them it's not working before the warranty is up and get a free one with no questions asked. They don't even have battery testing equipment. If you don't have a Costco membership, just get the cheapest battery you can possibly get, it's more than likely made by Johnson Controls anyway, which is what you want.

That would be something I'd imagine had never been replaced due to the mileage. I'd change them out just for the hell of it honestly. That way, you can read how each cylinder is doing health wise as well

We just replaced the original Volvo battery in our '04 V70 which we bought in the summer of 2003....that's 13 years of service from that battery! These batteries can last a long time!!!
Btw, we found an identical battery to the original Volvo battery at NAPA for a great price (core trade in and for sale- like just over $100).... the only difference in the battery was the label...grab handles- everything were exactly the same!!

The AGM batteries that have been popping up all over are absolutely fantastic, and worth every penny of the premium price. Especially for the fact that they're fully sealed so they are better suited for trunk mounting.

I 2nd going with a Costco battery. They get theirs from Interstate (Johnson Controls) and they are good batteries! I currently have a newish battery in my '04 S60 from AAA which uses again the same battery as Costco/Interstate. Same warranty on it as well. You'll pay WAY too much for an OEM battery that will do the same, but without the warranty benefits.

Yup, you're basically just reinforcing what I stated earlier at the beginning of this post. The Costco warranty is currently 48 month free replacement. And yes, to the OP, as I also stated earlier, you're most likely buying a Johnson Controls manufactured battery which is a good thing. Normally, one massive company having a monopoly on the majority of the market share on any given good/product is a bad thing but, in the case of the JC batteries.... They're just plain good! Also, in my experience, Exide made batteries are rubbish. YMMV. I currently have an Interstate Battery but previously it had a AAA battery that was dated 6-15 and it was garbage, but you can't expect every battery out there to be perfect. Quality Control can only do so much ;)
