Barking dog noise

I'm probably crazy but I have to ask. I keep hearing a noise that sounds like dogs barking. It seems to be coming from the engine compartment. I hear it only when I'm stopped. Sitting at a red light, when I'm parked. It's not loud at all which is why I probably can only hear it when I'm stopped. So, am I hearing things or is this a documented issue? Thanks!

Me too. Plus it's free so why not?

Because it's murder! Sure, you might say that dogs aren't people, so killing them doesn't count as murder, but barking Volvo dogs should have some rights too! Anyway, I noticed the sound after I'd had my car for about 10 hours. I was driving around without the stereo on (wanted to hear the engine, etc), and noticed the sounds at stop lights. I've learned to accept the dogs as part of the personality of my Volvo, and I wouldn't get rid of them even if given the chance. lol

Re: Barking dog noise (arig)

I could not live with the barking dogs and did find it/them obtrusive and unacceptable in a car in this price range. But the software fix is free, takes a very short time and, six months after, the barking dogs have remained muzzled and quiet. Take it to your dealer.

By the way, I made the dealer read these posts to prove that this was not just me and that it was a real and fixable problem before they did the research and found the software fix.

Take it in!!!!!

To me "barking dogs" is the sound of improperly operating servo motors. I experienced this (bark, bark...bark,bark) near the end of our two week OSD drive and my US dealer quickly diagnosed and fixed it. It was a bad servo motor and software wasn't an issue.

The servo motors do make noise during normal operation but I find the superior operation of the automatic climate system makes up for any audio anoyance.

Re: Barking dog noise (jackf)

Occasional barks when you first start the car or adjust the climate settings are normal. At around 4000 miles my car's dogs started doing the constant "zzt zzt, bark bark" noise through the whole car trip. I also couldn't get any hot or cool air on the driver side without cranking the fan to extremes.

The dealer did the software update and calibrated the servos inside the climate system and the dogs are all happy now.

hahaha, +1

Nobody's saying that there can not be anything wrong with the AC, some improper operation could cause excessive barking, but then the dogs are unhappy. We should distinguish between happy and hungry dogs.
Happy dogs are OK, unhappy/hungry dogs - go see your dealer. Simple like that

Re: (sarahbau)

I agree with Sarahbau on this matter, fourscore and seven years ago when the first Swedish cars left Belgium to arrive on north american soil (or asphalt depending on State ) People like Thomas Jefferson didn't complain about Volvos' barking Dogs. do you want to know why? OK he was dead , Volvos didn't bark back then .... yeah..yeah...so what? BUT those dogs still have rights! Kill the dog and you kill the brightest Beacon of liberty . LONG LIVE THE DOGS , VIVE LES CHIENS!!! (feel free to correct my French, I got a C- in highschool)

Re: Barking dog noise (jackf)

In my case, the fix, which I repeat has worked now for several months, was a softwear patch. The servo motors were not defective but were cycling back and forth re-directing the air flow every couple of seconds as a result of commands coming from the programming. The noise is not loud, but it can get obtrusive. I kind of got used to it, but when passengers asked "what's the strange noise that souns like barking dogs in the distance", I said to mysef "self, enough of this. You paid over $50,000 CDN for the car, it ought not to do this", so I took it in and it was fixed in a few minutes at no cost and my dealer washed my car.

Hey, if you think the dogs are wo/mans best friend, and don't want to muzzle them when they bark too much, that's your call. But don't criticize those of us that think a dog needs to be trained ir it will soon begin to think it's your master.

Hey arig, I meant no offence either, my apologies.
It should not get any worse, it's normal HVAC operation. And it's not really intrusive, you'll learn to live with it
The dogs arrived on mine.
I sure hope I do not have to "live with it" as I have never heard anything like this on any car let alone an otherwise pretty nice one.
