Auto windshield wipers

Anyone find the that when wipers are turned to auto they are basically useless?
We’ve had some rain in the last couple of days here and I decided to try them again. Waiting at a red light with just very light rain, wipers were at full blast, and then slowed down when I started to move again. They never seem to get the right speed with the amount of rain. Just curious how you find yours to be.

I love them... You can adjust the sensitivity with the intermittent knob.

Some situations I turn them off.... salt spray in and frost in the winter don't get sensed correctly. But otherwise I find they work really well. I tend to keep the sensitivity one notch from full.

After a half dozen or so cars with this feature we recently bought a new car that doesn't have auto wipers and I can't say that I miss it. For me they always seem to be wiping too early or too late so requiring sensitivity adjustments, just like an intermittent wiper so for me they are of little worth.

Because of how the sensor works, it may has different level of sensibility for rain drop sizes. Anyhow, my experience is it mostly works. I sometimes have to turn the knob one step forward to make it wipe immediately. If the knob is at the end already I turn it to beginning and start from there. Not too much a trouble and I am fine with it.

Actually my need for wipe speed is quite simple, just make it faster according to speed, like volume based on speed. Then I can manually change the wiping speed occasionally just fine.

I have found you need to replace the wiper blades more frequently in order for the sensors to remain "clean". If the wipers are streaking or skip anywhere over the sensors then the auto feature will drive you mad (at least it did for me). I figured this out on our old XC90 after battling with the sensitivity and turning auto on/off all the time. When it was off I wanted it back, when it was on it drove me nuts. Then I replaced the blades and all was good.

Also make sure the sensors are clean (no dead bugs or anything that is semi-permantent that you can clean off by hand with glass cleaner and some elbow grease)

I give mine 7/10. A lot of times the rain will fill up the windshield and the sensor doesn't notice, so I have to manually clear it. Or, like OP, it will go full blast even on light rain.

I am convinced the rain sensor is tied to the front camera. Every time it's completely off, I wipe all of the grime/dust off the front camera and the autowipers return to functioning well...

I find auto wipers work well about 90% of the time, and terrible in the rest. This goes for all cars I had with this feature (VW's, Audis, Nissan and others). It always gets me wondering how come the tech industry is obsessed with getting thins like general AI done, but overlooks issues like auto wipers not fully resolved.

Yes, hate mine also. In addition to doing what you say, mine accumulate snow and ice rapidly and are horrible in the snowy weather. I have to manually blast the defrost to try and clear them.

They are erratic only when there's a lot of moisture or fog in very early mornings. They tend to go crazy fast. Other than that, good thus far.

Same here. No problem in operation other than the one sweep everytime when the car is turned on which isn't really a problem, just a minor annoyance.

Running wipers over a dry window is stupid.* Apparently, Volvo fixed it as you have to manually engage it (at least on my 2015).

*being stupid doesn't count if you are travelling and driving in one of those countries that drive on the wrong side of the road, and you go to hit your turn signal and...
