I checked out the ATP turbo web site and saw that 12 sec C30 vid. Now I see , they offer 2 kits a GT3071R and a GT3076R . I guess the latter can potentially yield 50hp more with its 76mm compressor wheel vs. 71mm .

Looks like even a GT35/40R might be available?

So , not to be greedy or anything... especailly since 280-290 crank Hp seemed to be the highest the average Joe (or Jane) with a late model C30/S40/V50 could possibly get.

Now these kits are coming out!!! what are the pros and cons?

OK, we will most likely void any warrenty. (I actually removed not only the BSR settings but also the BSR floor mats before taking her into service)

Is there any motormanagement that can support this?

I was tired of getting passed on the autobahn by Lupo GTIs , and was glad to have a raised limiter to around 260km/h

while mildly amusing (or very for a Volvo Wagon) 260 is starting to become normal. Would a tuner be able to give us say a 285 plus "limiter" if we had the power to pull the gear. My guess is 290 km/h would definately be reasonable with this type of upgrade.

I also wonder if changing the stock 3.77 final drive to the diesels 2.77 would be a smart choice.... if top end is the main goal? a couple VAG people have done this.

oh.. fuel efficiency? how bad would our cars be with something like this?

I got 22mpg driving aggresively and 29 mpg trying to save gas. would having a bigger turbo suck up more gas all the time? or only during boost?

Internals... would we need to upgrade? 10psi stock, 13-15 psi with various ECU upgrades, but ATP is talking 20psi!!! are our motors strong enough to take this?

oh well any help is welcomed... I'm really having trouble sleeping at night thinking that my Volvo could be faster. (and like any "normal" enthusist I'll gladly extend my ramon noodle diet a few more years for 100 + hp)

Re: ATP turbo kit ... pros and cons (V50_T5)

engine could use .5 lower CR, the bigger turbos can be put into surge which would melt the turbo and engine down in quick order. You better be learning to drive a big turbo car and that means no low RPM, let boost / torque get you over the hill etc. You ALWAYS need to down shift for any boost because on a big turbo at low boost and low flow speeds mean past surge line means melted turbo blades...

Re: ATP turbo kit ... pros and cons (Oldman) - Old Surge

To Stay Away form the Surge , maybe a 2860R Turbo would be the Better Choice ?

Could Run it around 12-14 lbs and Get 300 HP

Staying Cooler

Meant to Say 2860RS - Turbo

Re: ATP turbo kit ... pros and cons (Oldman) - Old Surge (EngTech)

Drive a WRX or a MS3 they are 0 fun in every day driving because it has all of the fury of the stock I4 hp till the turbo spools at 3k plus.

I for one hate turbo lag and love the low end tq our teeny turbo provides, it makes every day driving more fun, a large turbo will have to be spooled ALOT.

Other then that cost is a big factor.

Re: ATP turbo kit ... pros and cons (S40T5TurboGT)

IMO, the stock turbo with the current bolt ons and stage III BSR is about what 99% of the people would be happy with, spool is crazy fast, power is near unusable in the first two gears with a M6 and FWD, really my next upgrade needs to be a LSD... MPG and drivability are going DOWN with a turbo of the size we are talking about coulple that with a 4wd and auto trans and wagon, loaded down... um no thanks, I'd take a IS350 or something at that point.

Re: ATP turbo kit ... pros and cons (Oldman)

What kinda boost level is the BSR stage 3 pushing? (BSR's stage 3 still uses the stock turbo, right?) How much boost can the little stock turbo put out w/o problems?

Re: ATP turbo kit ... pros and cons (fletcher33)

about 15psi seems to be the best u can get.. i think there are some that do boost a bit above that lie 17-18 psi, but not sure if thats still efficient.

personally, if i did go for a bigger turbo, i probably would not go for anything much bigger than a 2871 so as to try and preserve as much low end as possible, altough ivariably some will be lost with a bigger turbo.

Re: ATP turbo kit ... pros and cons (Mistral)

Okay, that makes sense... the difference in the stage 1 thru 3 tunes is not peak boost but the mapping, timing, etc? Stage 1 tunes give 15-ish psi. My ipd stage 1 gives a bit over 16 psi. So if i went to stage 2 with a DP, it does not increase boost... just modifies the way it makes use of the boost and improved exhaust flow via timing and mapping?

I'm with you guys... I like the low end torque and relatively lag-free acceleration for daily driving. Maybe someday if i get bored... the turbo kit would be feasible.

Re: ATP turbo kit ... pros and cons (fletcher33)

it is not peak boost, the stock turbo can't keep boost up at higher RPM and even if it could, the backpressure in the exhaust manifold must be CRAZY high as the turbine is so super small and so is the wastegate.

well here a pic of a fellow swedespeeders speedometer with the bsr stage 1 (258 crank hp)

Image

his is an S40 T5 awd (4.00 final drive)

mines an V50 T5 fwd (3.77 final drive) I'm about 400 less rpm at those speeds, I hit a limiter just over that pic.. at 160 mph.

Scandinavian Car Tuning claimed to hit 168mph in their stage 2 270hp (most likely on a downgrade.. but still impressive)

so with an additional 100-200 hp ... even with our breadbox areodynamics .. IMO 12-25 mph plus top end (over that what others in the 258-278 crank hp range have already done should be possible. )
