Going to schedule to have it done (hopefully Friday) and I'll be buying the PPG glass as it saves me $200. The auto glass shop assured me it would look and be just as reliable as my Volvo glass, just without the Volvo name on it.

Re: Anyone have their S40 windshield replaced? (movo)

I had mine replaced a few years ago. I used Safelite Autoglass, which is one of the biggest auto-glass companies in the world. Their glass was identical to the OEM Volvo glass (made on the exact same assembly line), only without the Volvo branding... so it was a couple hundred dollars cheaper. Plus, Safelite will drive to you to do the replacement. You can have it done while you're at work, which makes it quite convenient.

I haven't had any problems at all with the replacement... in fact I had totally forgotten I had it replaced until I read this thread.

Re: Anyone have their S40 windshield replaced? (movo)

i just had mine replaced about a month ago. no problems so far. i got the oem windshield with all the srs, volvo marks on it. i believe it is a couple hundred dollars more expensive, but i opted for oem cause allstate was taking care of the bill.

If youre paying for it out of your own pocket, i suggest you buy the non-oem windshield. the guy that did the work on mine said that there is no difference in quality between the two.

Re: Anyone have their S40 windshield replaced? (taintedintuition)

PPG and Pilkington are both excellent quality replacements which we have installed in many of our cars over the years. That said, if the V50 ever needs a windshield, it will be OE.

I don't understand why some of you guys pay for glass out of your own pocket? Break the glass, pay your $200 deductible, and have an OE one put in. Simple.

Certainly. But it's at a cost of about $500 bucks.

It's my experience that you get what you pay for. Volvo (and OE suppliers) parts may cost more, but the quality is certainly apparent. This isn't restricted to glass -- with rare exception I'd recommend anything in a blue box (i.e. Volvo) over anything else available on the open market.

Just got it replaced today. The PPG glass' defrosting "dots" take up noticeably less space than the Volvo glass and there are 2 ugly airbag symbols on the lower corners of the glass.

I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow. And to be honest, I don't remember exactly what the Volvo glass looked like...

Hey guys,

My V50 developed a 14in crack on the driver side. I need to replace the windshield relatively soon. I don't want to use a cheap chinese glass, but I wanted to see if you guys knew who the OEM manufacturer for our glass is? I want to order THAT glass from that brand just to make sure it lines up perfectly.

Hi m4gician,

Just had mine done last week. Got hit by a rock while following a truck and small nick turned into a 12" crack. I called my insurance and they said they would only cover an aftermarket, not an OEM (it's in that small print we never read - any car over 2 years and insurance companies don't have to give you OEM).

Anyway, went to Speedy Glass and they were great. Put in aftermarket and told me they would warranty for as long as I owned the car. They even knocked a hundred off my deductible. I'm pretty picky when it comes to my car and it's a perfect match for the OEM. It's nice to be able to see again after 7 years of getting sandblasted on the highways.

Dont know what brand mine is but I know its not OEM. Was replaced before I bought the car. As far as the glass its self I have no issues with it. When I bought it the rain sensor had come loose and after taking it all the way off I found the paint on the mounting bracket had separated from the metal. It took a few tries of different things to get it to stick again. Finally ended up with sanding all the paint off of the mounting surface and bought some adhesive from VW/Audi/Bentley that they use to mount their sensors at the factory. Did that last summer and its still holding. If yours has a rain sensor that would be the only real issue I can see to watch out for on aftermarket windshields.

I had to replace the windshield on our 2010 S40 last December due to the seal separating.I went with a Pilkington and it was just about an exact duplicate.Mine didn't have the rain sensor and was about $225 installed. No more leak and we are happy.

Sekurit I believe is the OEM on the S40

The glass industry has gone through all kinds of consolidations & so forth in the last several years. Safelite (who owns just about every glass replacement company these days) USED to carry the good stuff but now makes their own in most cases. The last piece I got for my Audi was terrible, they brought out a second piece that was better but still not correct. The tech (who's been around 15 years) told me this was real common. They were "in the process" of upgrading their plant to ISO standards. Look real hard for an independent company that can supply Sekurit or strongly consider getting it from Volvo.

I've had MANY windshields replaced over the years on my vehicles up here in Alaska. My insurance company (USAA) defaults to Safelite for claims, but I always request my local Novus shop who uses Pilkington glass. My factory glass was all marked Sekurit which is not available here.
