My 04 S60R is showing this message. No others.

Yes, I know there are other threads. But I think I've tried what is mentioned in those threads. Is there anything I can try before I take it to Jack Scoville? Here's what I have done:

1. Reset ECU (fuse 6 and 23)
2. Disconnect negative battery cable, charge battery for an hour
3. Replace Battery with 730CCA one (old was original 600, 45% capacity and 298 CCA real)
4. Pray to Volvo gods
5. Scream and swear

I know I will be replacing a strut soon. I have a real bad one leaking, and it's starting to get real loud clicking. Since it is part of the same system, maybe that's the culprit? *crosses fingers*

The ABS is connected to it, according to my mechanic and the dealership. It makes sense. Lose traction, brakes are applied and power redistributed. Active Chassis detects braking and adjusts suspension when cornering. My favorite video on the R:

Until you hook it up to Vida via Dice you are just pulling at straws. Get some codes and it can be diagnosed, whether that is going to a dealer, Indy, friend with Dice/Vida, or buying your own unit. Impossible to diagnose without the proper information.

Don't overlook the steering wheel position sensor (aka clock spring). Will show on VIDA and IMHO is way too easy to repair yourself with either a yard part or new from boston volvo or tascaparts.com.

JM2C / YMMV

i get the "anti-skid service required" frequently. ill start up the car and it will say something like check anti- skid and than as soon as i turn the wheel it will change to "service required" wasnt too worried but i had my friend hook up his scanner to it and sure enough i have a faulty steering wheel position sensor. so ksimp88 that would be the first thing id check.

Unfortunately Anti-skid service required or anti-skid temporarily off is one of those more convoluted messages. It can range from a bad speed sensor, ABS sensor, bad yaw sensor, steering wheel position sensor of even a bad DEM. best to get the codes pulled to see the exact culprit.

I had this come up on my R, and it turned out to be a bad hub bearing ABS sensor ring.

Spot on. OP needs to get the actual codes pulled, preferably with VIDA/DICE.

When I had this message I needed a new DEM.

Good thread. I'm having this issue from time to time too! Love the swedespeed support line! :p

Need to emphasize again, all these diagnosis of clock spring are completely bollocks until you have actual codes in front of you. Read the car, post them up, or interpret them yourselves. Anyone guessing the actual fault is ridiculous without information!

Got mine fixed. I had to take the steering wheel off and reset the clock spring to zero. The problem was that when I had the steering rack disconected awhile ago, I must have turned the wheel. doing the reset procedure and clearing the codes with dice took care of it all.

You need to remove the steering wheel and zero (reset) the contact reel. That means removing the airbag so be very careful there.
1. disconnect negative terminal from battery.
2. To remove the airbag: starting from a straight wheel, turn the wheel 90 degrees in one direction to expose a hole on the back side of the steering wheel.
3. Use a screw driver or something long and thin to get in that hole. when it bottoms out you have to LIFT the handle upwards hoping you will catch the spring that holds the airbag in place. After a few tries it should pop out.
4. Turn the wheel around the other way to expose the hole on the other side and do the same thing.
5 Turn your wheel back so the tires and the wheel itself are perfectly straight.
6.take the actual steering wheel off but pay close attention to the position of contact reel behind it BEFORE you remove the wheel (it is the white plastic piece, note that it is pointing in the 1 o'clock direction). It will have to be in the same position when you put the wheel back on.
7. When the wheel is off you will be faced with the contact reel and clock spring. GENTLY rotate the contact reel until it stops and do not force it further. (if it doesn't stop then it is likely the cable ribbon inside is ripped and you will have to replace the whole CS). Notice there is a small window on there, pay attention to it and rotate the clkspring counterclockwise until you see a yellow tab appear behind the window. That is your center point. now adjust the contact reel so it is pointing to the original direction of 1 oclock. If I remember correctly, the hole of the tab that is pointing out aligns with a small square right underneath it.
8. center and put the steering wheel back on, while holding the reel in place, organize and connect the cables back to the airbag and just push the airbag in its place; it will simply snap in. Attach battery and you are done.

ok, for a while I had a "chassis settings temporarily off" message. A couple days ago it went away. and a couple times in the past few weeks the Anti-skid service required message went away, with AWD working, at least for a while. Thoughts? I'll try that clock spring reset

On Sunday, I had to drive (very slowly) through a flooded portion of a local road. About 15 miles later the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Brake failure, Anti-skid service, etc. After sitting for about 20 minutes while the rain continued to fall I was able to get home with just the Chassis setting and Anti-skid error messages.

On Monday, the errors didn't come up during a trip to the store (about 10 miles round trip).

Today, the Chassis settings message came on a couple of times, while the Anti-skid message came on every time I start the R.

Guess I need to drive to the dealer to get the codes pulled.

Ahh -- hoping it's not the DEM. I just had it rebuilt by Xemodex in the spring

I've had the "Anti-Skid Service Required" and "Brake Assist Service Required" messages intermittently for most of the two years that I've owned my VR. Recently, I've been getting the "Brake Failure Stop Safely" message -- also intermittently -- and I've been able to simply turn off the ignition, turn it back on, and the message usually clears. Sometimes I've had to do that several times to get it to clear. Yesterday, I had the car at the dealership and I asked them to diagnose this issue. The result = replace the Brake Booster because there is a failing sensor in the booster, and an estimate of $1200 to replace it. My questions are:

Where can I find reliable information about the replacement procedure to determine whether I can do this myself? I found the part for ~$560 at both IPD and FCP.
If I go with the DIY route, are there other pieces/parts I should address at the same time?
Is it possible to replace just the sensor?
What happens to my braking ability when the sensor fails completely - will the brakes still work?

In other news, my VR also has a leaking transmission oil pan ($550 est.), and a still (mildly) leaking angle drive ($800+ est.). The trans leak will be fixed today, but I'm planning to let the angle drive slide for a while since it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse since it was first noticed over a year ago.

Thanks in advance for any helpful thoughts and suggestions.

I know it sounds stupid but check your brake fluid. The sensors associated with the level itself are so ridiculously sensitive. I never got to brake failure immanent but I did receive the other two with even the smallest of inclines when stopping due to the fluid shifting. I check my level all the time to make sure its tip top and I have never had a problem since.

I did that trick and it says airbag service urgent.... I'm sure I plugged it in correct. I'll recheck tomorrow. Now the stupid chassis settings temporarily off thing is back on... we'll see what happens. Either way, this issue is FIXED by march of 14. If I have to put aside mods, so be it. I miss my AWD. :(

^ I had my brake booster fixed just before my warranty expired. same issue. I'd get the part as cheap as you can and go to an indy that has a vida/dice. I can't remember if the part needs to be tied to the car with that software or not or you can just swap it in.

Doesn't low brake fluid give you 'brake fluid low' warning? Pretty sure that is what i would get as slave was going. started happening around turns at speed first before it got low enough to stay on. I agree though, that sensor is super sensitive on brake fluid level.

So no vidi/ dice calibration for you
What about the SAS upgrade? did you need that?

I noticed 2 part #'s for the clockspring the new upgraded # according to the dealr is 31313083
I wonder if that is why a SAS software upgrade is required for the above part number (redesign ?)
Maybe the old number does not need it?
Did you use the above # or the old # I think the old one31264469

(I'm ready to replace mine, but not sure if I have to order vida/ dice and also visit the dealer :(( for an sas upgrade afterwards)

What if I pulled that AC cord from the actual uhhh.... neck? It's still in there, but I suspect I pulled it. I accidently plugged the battery in before putting the airbag on, now I have anti skid, chassis settings off, and srs airbag urgent. thoughts?

Also, on the topic, how does one trace the cable connection from the DEM? Where does it go?

#34 ·
Sooo...the continuing rain in PA washed out work at the golf course today, allowing me to visit Lehman Volvo. Pulled the codes and it looks like the DEM is done again.

Ironically, MrsP and I are heading to Toronto on Friday, so I'll be dropping the DEM off at Xemodex to have them fix it again.

#36 ·
Only if we don't have to drive into the city. :p

We're heading to my parents in Port Perry. We always try to take 407 and avoid the 401 and QEW.

#38 ·
Argh....the frustration continues.

I dropped the DEM off at Xemodex on Friday and they were helpful enough to repair it by Monday, allowing me to bring it back to PA. But -- I reinstalled it this morning and the Anti Skid Service error message continues to come up.

I am at the point of throwing up the hands in surrender. :(

Anti-Skid Service required message here recently as well. Had a buddy pull the codes, there were several but he said he thought the one causing it was the "right front faulty sensor". I've seen this as a common cause here. Is there a way to find the steps to correct it or directions for replacing it and the part to do so? Thanks as always guys, I love my R but can't afford to pay someone to fix it when something goes wrong.
