Another water leak issue

Hey guys,

I had posted before about a water leak issue on my new to me 2017 V90 CC. Bought last Nov. Had the windshield replaced when I bought it to pass safety and kept having water dripping from the intellisafe module on the front window. Had the windshield replaced with a new one and to be safe had the front drains cleaned, no water issues since, they said the windshield was faulty. Fast forward to yesterday and we had major rain all night and day. Went to go to work in the morning and noticed water dripping again. Felt around and saw the headliner, A pillar and driver footwell soaked. On the drive I had a few errors come up , Service Parking Brake, ESC/ABS temporarily off and TPMS not working. After work I was hoping it was just a fluke but sure enough on my drive home had the same issues and a couple times at lights the car shut off. I was able to get it home and when I got home I left the windows open and used a shop vac to get most of the water out of the footwell, it was still damp when I went to bed.

This morning I went outside to check it out and everything was dry except the footwell, which was a little damp still. Took it for a drive and had the same errors come up about the parking brake, TPMS and ABS/ESC controllers. I figure the driver side roof drain is either plugged or broken off and have a buddy of mine coming today to check it out but what do I do about the electrical errors. If this doesn't go away, what are my options/what sort of repair am I looking at. Volvo is closed today (Sunday) so can't call til tomorrow to talk to them. Is this something I can claim with insurance about comprehensive insurance since there was no real negligence on my part, water got inside (no windows left open, sunroof closed) and screwed up the electrical system? I assume there are wires under the floor there which is why this is happening.

I am located in Ontario Canada if that matters, so no lemon law or anything like that.

Anyone had these issues before? Like I said, I'm almost positive it is the drain but I am more worried about the electrical issues.

Any help appreicated!

When this happens to me, it's always been the sunroof drains. I check it by doing the following:
  • open the sunroof, and locate the drain holes in the front corners of the sunroof drain channel.
  • use a small container to put water into the sunroof drain channel. I have a small flower pot watering container. Use care to not get water in the cabin (don't overfill the channel!)
  • if the water does not drain quickly, then the drain has blockage and needs to be cleared.
  • if it drains quickly, be sure you see water coming out under the car. If not, it may be a disconnected drain hose emptying into the cabin (I've never had this happen to me, but have heard about it from others)
Check both of the front 2 drains. There are generally 2 rear drains as well, but I've never had luck getting to those.

Once you have the leak found and fixed, the carpet and interior need to be thoroughly dried. On my older v70, I disconnect the battery and pull the front carpet section to put in the sun, and run fans in the cabin.

Post what you find.

I tested them today, water didn't flow down the driver side, so I blew them out and all is well. I figured it was that. I'm mainly worried about the electrical aspect. Tomorrow I will pull out any carpet I can from front and dry it out. Is there an easy way to get the front driver floor carpet out?

A sort of update. Been drying it out for a few days now with a dehumifier and fans. Everything seems dry. Have to work the next couple days so will keep an eye on it before continuing to dry it. Took it for a few drives the last couple days and haven't had any kind of errors so progress I suppose

Have you disconnected any of the flooded connectors?

If you are mechanically inclined. I would pull the battery, then go and check the modules that were flooded. They may still have water in the connectors or even in the cases for the modules. Dry it out, check for corrosion and reassemble. Also I'd be looking around to make sure no grounds are corroding.

Of course do not do this if you aren't comfortable disassembling the car. I'd also get a scan tool or use Orbit or Vdash to reset the SRS light and check for other faults

Thanks for all the suggestions, I really appreciate it. I am not very mechanically inclined unfortunately lol. I would attempt to get the floor out the next couple days but it's literally going to rain heavy for 3 days and I don't have a garage that will fit this beast. That and right now I only have this car as my wife's on maternity leave and we got rid of our other car as she works from home anyways. When this happened we decide to dive back into having two cars but not there yet.

Honestly, I am tempted to call my insurance company and try to get all this covered under comprehensive coverage, not sure how this will go but I read it should be covered as there was no negligence on my part.
