Well uh. I average ~21 and fuel prices around here rarely have gone into the $4.00 range. Right now its $3.45, but premium which is what im assuming your going off of is 3.95

I drive alot and my gas expensise is well... Lets say its well over $4000 a year.

I haven't posted here on Sweedespeed in a long time... I was curious about my own stats after reading this so I calculated mine for the past 2 years. I started using the Mileage Keeper app on my iPhone towards the end of 2011 so I only have my data going back that far.

I have a 2005 T5 FWD purchased in November of 2004 and here are my stats. Note: I use Regular gas in my car, not Premium. I know it would perform better with Premium and used to only use Premium in my car for the first 5 years I owned it but gas prices were crazy then and I just switched and haven't gone back. Every now and then I'll fill 'er up with Premium gas but it's rare when I do.

2013
8562 Miles Driven
380.89 Gallons of gas
22.48 MPG
$1241.19 Total gas expense
$3.26 Avg per gallon

2012
12,818 Miles Driven
516.202 Gallons of gas
24.83 MPG
$1736.21 Total gas expense
$3.36 Avg per gallon

It takes a few tankfuls of premium for the ECM to re-adapt to "proper fuel" (heh) so if you normally run regular and you're only occasionally running a single tank of premium that is just a waste of money. Pick one grade and stick with it.

Gas mileage on my 2009 SUCKS! I get an average of 260 miles per tank (pushing it to 280) for every fill up. It burns on average of 11-12 gallons per every visit...and I fill up about every 7-8 days! But then again L.A. traffic is pretty much stop and go no matter what. Just hideous! On the other hand, my '08 Audi A4 averages about 425 miles/tank burning about 16 gallons.

Our cars require premium gasoline. Running lower octane fuel will lower both performance and fuel economy. Do you really want the knock sensors adjusting timing to lower performance when we spend all this money for more power?
