It really is amazing how much trouble the P3’s have given the early adopters. The EX90 has the same hardware, software, and built on the same platform. It’s likely gonna be a wild ride…
Don't forget the first Polestar 3s came from China. I think when Volvo saw the problem they held back the EX90s for a fix, which is why we're only getting them now. The EX30s we have as demos and what we have delivered so far don't seem so buggy, so let's hope ...

EX30s are a different platform/architecture.

The EX90s were held back because of the Lidar system, which is standard on the EX90, but optional on the P3. So they were able to build the non-Lidar P3s while the EX90 was on hold.

That was the first and larger delay. The production actually began in August and we were supposed to get test/showroom units in September. But they were held back at that point not because of LiDAR but because of some stuff that needed to be sorted out with the AAOS. The EX30 and EX90 are both using the new version of AAOS that is going to end up being put into all the Google powered cars, the only difference between those is that the EX30 has its own app, actually.

But you are correct in that the first Polestar 3s weren't even available with LiDAR, it can be ordered now but not for delivery until the second half of 2025. Probably after the EX90s 'learning period' for the LiDAR.

In the end we got the new motors with some more range too, so there's that ...

Check the parts origin of the EX90 on your lot. It’s produced in South Carolina. But it’s about 1/3 from China 🤷‍♂️. I’m guessing the batteries, electronics, and electronic hardware materials are sourced exactly the same.

They have. But the first priority was getting the showroom/test units to the dealerships before doing the customer vehicles. Then they got held up due to some sort of software issue. What is really odd is that everyone was supposed to get the same Vapour/Dawn combination plus another of their choice, now what they are sending is all random.

The one we got so far is Platinum/Cardamom w/o B&W (this is unusual for them to do). The second on the way is a 6 passenger Onyx/Charcoal w/B&W.

We didn't have that many pre-sold and once the people realized they could get the ventilation if they held off, they mostly wanted it (duh). We'll do better once we are test driving them, up in Canada the Luxury Tax messed up the pricing in particular for leases on these. I suspect most people will choose finance or cash, which is what people were mostly doing with the earlier PHEVs.
@thecanadaman, I'm interested to see what your experience is with the phantom battery drain. Is this something they fixed vs the P*3, or do early adopters have to wait for either software of hardware (new core compute) upgrades?
Yes, the Lux tax in Canada does make leasing more $$$. I'm in BC & we have increased PST as well.

They've done some sort of update apparently where the system will go into a deeper sleep when the car hasn't been used for 72 hours. Because we just got our first unit and it hasn't been prepared yet, we haven't had one here running yet. But when we get the showroom model, no chance it will go to sleep because it will keep getting opened.

I may not be able to report reliably on this until there are customer deliveries.

Like every other Volvo. You'll find parts from many different places ...

The 72 hour deep sleep is what's been in place, it's not a new thing. That said, not all cars seem to actually do it, and even if they do, if you open your app it restarts that clock.

I assume it's the same on the Volvo side, but Polestar has already committed to a hardware update to replace the current chipset in the car.

It's not AAOS. The SC built Polestar 3s are also just now making their way to dealers, and started production in August as well. There's nothing different software-wise for the non-SC built P3s. They're being delivered with v1.1.22, which is what's out with the other P3s now. And those P3s are still without Lidar.

The EX30 is a completely different architecture, being built on the SEA platform, similar to the Polestar 4. The EX90 and Polestar 3 are SPA2. And yeah, they all run AAOS, but that's like saying a Samsung, Motorola, and Pixel phone all run Android, so they're the same, but the architecture, modules, etc, are what really makes the difference.

SPA2 has been absolutely bogged down with problems.

I realize that ... it's just nothing to do with the delay from September to November. The Polestar 3s don't have LiDAR standard so they can sell for less than EX90. The LiDAR is expensive. The platform has nothing to do with the AAOS, it's the same in both cars.

Hopefully by the time they push the newer system to all AAOS cars any bug there is will be gone. Hopefully ...

You're missing what I'm saying.

The Polestar 3s built at the SC, starting in August, are only now arriving at dealers just like the EX90. Those P3s are identical to the current Chinese built P3s being sold and that were already sold. They have the same software on them and are without Lidar.

So the September to November "delay" was just logistical staging and building out inventory to get to dealers at a relatively equal timeframe because the US dealer network, such that it is, would lose its **** if certain dealers started receiving bulk shipments before others.

Volvo could have held back the EX90 because they weren't happy with the current state of the software (and they'd be right to do so), however that wouldn't explain the P3s being held for the exact same timeframe given they're actively delivering those, in Launch Edition form, with the exact same software.

That isn't what we were told. Up here there is no such thing as dealer inventory on electrics, all drawn from port once sold. We just get a test drive and a showroom car, and we are told when we can sell our demos. So bulk is not a thing, but maybe at some point there will be bulk at port for us ... but not now.

"EX60 will be based on the next-generation SPA3 platform... It will be followed by three more unnamed EVs, which will feature similar software and electrical architectures."
I thought it was interesting that Volvo is all-in on SPA3 before SPA2 demonstrates any legitimate production/ deliveries/ revenue. Like collecting phone numbers in front of your prom date.

The lidar scanner bump at the top of the windshield is not an attractive feature. All I can think of is a digital readout saying Uber or Lyft!

It is very simple. Polestar has a much higher risk tolerance for SW related issues than Volvo does. Volvo did not want to release EX90 until the SW was at a more robust level.

I’ve been seeing these relatively often on the road but I work near Volvo corp in NNJ. Very sleek looking but IMO look similar to the new Rovers. Which btw JLR and BMW are also local. Lots of camo test mules here!! I’m up the road from BMW actually and hear Ms roaring around all the time!!
