Air Distribution Damper Motor

Hi Everyone,

My air distribution motor is having some trouble. Hoping to get some input as to how to proceed.

- All electronics in the car are working properly including seat heaters with the exception of a clicking 6 CD changer, and the passenger side mirror heater
- All climate functions are working except switching between the middle (chest) and lower (foot) air directions don't work. Defrost/upper works well, but for the middle and lower vents, most of the air always comes out of the middle vents and a little comes out of the foot vents, and selecting both or one or the other doesn't really make a difference. Seems like not all the air is making it to the vents in these cases.

The code I'm getting in VIDA (and what's reported after running damper calibrations) is: CCM-0071 Damper Position (TP) Faulty position. Pernament fault.

I tried to 'un-jam' the damper motor / flap by calibrating the motors using VIDA. As reported in another thread, doing this repeatedly can help un-jam the motors/flaps. So, I did it about 5 times in a row - most times it reported 87 out of 537 steps, One time it got pretty close to 500 out of 537 steps (and I think it sounded a bit healthier that time, maybe), so I ran the calibration one more time to try to loosen it up a little more and it went back to 87, and subsequent calibrations wouldn't let it budge any more.

I'm thinking that the flap is just jammed and it's more of a mechanical issue, but just curious if anyone has any other thoughts. Ideally solutions that don't require taking the whole dash / climate unit out!!

Thanks!

Following, interested to see what happens... have similar issues with my C70

+1. Mine isn't this bad but I get the same code.

Personally I've torn this thing apart every which way in my head, and it comes down to the following steps:

Remove gauge cluster.
Remove waterfall.
Remove various trim pieces.
Undo screws holding dashboard on
Pull/push upwards and pop off (look on fleabay for a dashboard image so you can see where it hooks up).
Remove whatever else you need to, to get to the damper motors on the drivers side (2x).

I want to replace all three at once, but to the tune of $100-$150 per they're stupid pricey.

There is an old technical journal on this - old enough that it's not in TIE anymore. I had/have a hard copy of it somewhere.

It describes a binding issue in the linkage between the blend door and the damper motor. It affects climate boxes with a build date before ~May 2009, I believe.

Per this TJ, the repair is to replace the climate box. I've done a few. Not the worst repair I've done but nor would I be thrilled if one showed up in my workbay either.

Thanks, this is very helpful, it is design issue,I will struggle no more to solove this problem.

Here is a photo to directly show what is the binding between the main ventilation distribution damper and foot damper. There are totally 5 damper motors on my 2009 volvo C30:distribution(in blue circle),left temp.(below blue circle),right temp.,de-forest and inner/outer circulaiton drum. Except the distribution motor, all other 4 motors drive ONLY one damper directly. The distribution motor in blue circle, dirves both the main distribution damper(item 5) DIRECTLY and foot damper(item 7) with the black gear and white gear linkage INDIRECTLY.
When I tried to mannually open close,I can feel the resistance is strong.Checked damper 5 and 7 is free, lubricated wherever possible and replaced the distribution motor, boxed back, problem is still there.
For me,my location in winter is not very cold and in summer not very hot,no foot blow is not a big issue. Only the DTC code is boring. It is time to stop bothering and leave it.
To avoid the noises when auto-selection of air direction(non of the flow direction buttions is pressed on,when auto-selection mode, there is always some random noise, seems the motor is trying to get to the proper position, back and forth, time after time, but it can never reach),now I just select dashboard and/or head blowing, not much motor moving noise is heard that often.

Thanks for the input, guys.

I feel as though taking the whole dash and mucking around with the climate unit could do more harm than good. It works "well enough" that it's not worth me messing with it too much, nor is it worth the thousands of dollars for a replacement.

It would be great if I could just reach up behind the dash and manually move the linkage to loosen it up. Good to know that is a known issue, though.

Unfortunately I was not able to fix the air distribution damper motor issue. Luckily my current V50 doesn't have the same issue.

As for the CD changer - you may have some luck taking it apart and removing a stuck disk, but it doesn't seem to be an easy feat. Another option is to find another unit with identical serial number, but that requires a software update to pair it to the car.

As for the side mirror heater - that likely just requires new mirror glass, but make sure it's getting power with a multimeter. The glass just pops off if you pry on it firmly. I bought an aftermarket option which worked fine - just make sure you buy one with the heater element!

Ciao a tutti, cerco di risolvere il problema della mia C70 da anni. L'aria calda esce sempre sotto i piedi del guidatore, anche con la ventola spenta, e non appena raggiunge la temperatura, il motore inizia a soffrire. I can't find a solution today I dismantled some more dashboard but I didn't solve it Any ideas?
