It's very important to have a OEM Windshield. I have seen many issues with aftermarket windshields that have cameras and sensors mounted to windshield. No amount of calibrating would fix issues until a Volvo Factory Windshield was installed.
Not saying you will have issues but I wouldn't want any glass but what was originally equipped. Its a safety issue.

 

Did you have it replaced through insurance? Most reputable insurance companies should have the *only* option of using Volvo OEM glass on insurance claims. At least here in the US. And the cost could be almost $1200. As stated, the OEM glass is made for the specific sensors and camera in the Intellisafe. OEM glass also matches Volvo's standards with structural integrity.

An update to this. Our 2017 XC90 needed a new windshield again (cracked while parked and locked in our garage). Safelite did not use OEM glass this time. Oddly enough, the sensus screen stopped working until 4 re-starts. And the city safe stuff was inoperable. Safelite came out and had to replace the windshield again with non-OEM glass. So far safety stuff works.

Last year I also had a crack on my 2019 XC40 and had it replaced. I was told that getting an OEM windshield was important. But due to Intellisafe and it’s different features. Supposedly, in some cases the aftermarket ones can throw it off. I don’t know whether that’s true or not. But based on the dealership having said it, I called around and made sure I would get an OEM windshield. In most cases your insurance gives you a list of the companies you can choose. The dealership then let that company do the work at Volvo and Volvo did any needed recalibration afterwards free of charge.

So although I can’t vouch that what they told me is true, their actions made it seem like it is. I should also add-people often comment about how a lot of Volvo dealerships give really bad customer service (and the one closest to me has a bad reputation) but I drive out of my way because this place is excellent.

If it was me personally I would never replace the Original Volvo windshield with after market. Yes, probably it will cost you you some money ( because the insurance company wants the cheapest - for THEM replacement. After market windshield glass is not the same as Volvo. ( mats, wipers, oil filters may be fine....).
How many times do you replace the windshield in you cars - once, twice...
If it was me I would insist on original Volvo one and will pay pay out pf pocket ( in addition to the insurance coverage ) for one. Better safe than sorry.

 

i had to replace my windshield when a rock hit it and cracked it. when i heard the hit i thought it was ok cuz nothing happen right away but tthe crack slowly appeared and progressed as days went by. had it changed but it wasnt oem. been fine for me.

 

Happy new year! Would you mind confirming if your safety features all remained working with an after-market windshield on your 2020 XC40? The dealership is stating the OEM one is a different thickness of glass and the sensors for things like cameras, lane departure warning, and collision avoidance assistance no longer work if the glass thickness is different. My auto glass guys have been doing windshield repairs for decades and said while they have not done any Volvo XC40s yet, they've done many other new cars with similar features, like 2019-2021 Lexus, Hyundai, Audi etc and have never had a customer come back to complain of anything not working. He also said it's a set of wires that just have to be reconnected and getting OEM is a waste of my money. The dealership says I'll have to have it redone if I use after-market because nothing can be recalibrated with the wrong part, whilst my glass guy says it's a lie that all windshields are safety rated and similar thickness. Being that my windshield cracked from a rock on the highway, it's an unexpected expense and the $450 after market replacement is a LOT more attractive than the $1400 Volvo OEM dealership replacement, but I don't want to waste $450 if I'm forced to go the OEM route anyway to get all the safety features and sensors working again. Does anyone have personal experience with this pretty please?

Any dealer that tells you you need OEM glass because aftermarket can't be calibrated is feeding you a load of BS.

I got suckered into the dealer windshield protection for my 2019 lease. Under 10k miles I had to have the windshield replaced due to large crack from rock. I used the windshield protection and they just sent me to Safelite, which used aftermarket glass. Safelite did the calibration after the new glass, and I'm pretty sure at every 10k service interval Volvo recalibrates after cleaning in front of the cameras. I've never had an issue and everything works perfectly.

 

I haven't heard the dealer say this. But I've heard Safelite and Progressive say this multiple times.

So I went with an after market FUYAO windshield. It was $450 parts and labor in San Diego... Much better than the $1390 the dealership quoted me. The glass repair company also gave me the option of ordering OEM from Volvo and having them install it for around $950 total, but I rolled the dice. So far Lane departure has definitely kept working, and no errors yet. I'll update y'all if anything changes!

I always ask for Volvo glass. Once had my windshield replaced at work and the minute I got into car I knew it wasn't. No tint, super HOT. I made them bring Volvo glass and reinstall. Auto glass is also structural, so it matters.

 

Fuyao makes the side glass for my S60 and is the manufacturer for my aftermarket windshield too. Seems to work fine.
