I have been experiencing this problem since I had my 2019 XC90 T6. I would smell a strong "acid or vinegar" odor when I turned on A/C. I had a 2017 XC90 but I didn't remember I had this problem. Both of them are brand new but the 2017 one had more options, but I don't think it had anything to do with the A/C. I talked to the dealer about it several times but the problem never got resolved. On the most recent visit (a month ago), I was told to set to HI heat for 10 minutes to "burn" the mold, etc. This is just so ridiculous for a luxurious car to have this type of problem. I have owned 10 cars, but this is the first car I had this type of problem. It seems to be a design problem if the car owner has to go such a length to figure out how to get rid of the A/C smell...such as turning off A/C 5 minutes before turning off the engine.

Here are some specific solutions to the issue.
Europeans have been using these for long time and have specific shops that treat all the mold and smell blowing issues.
I’m posting some that are available for home use.
Hope it will work for some of you guys.

Here is a polish guy using one of the products.
He located the drain from which ac evap water drains under the vehicle and sprayed the coil with the product. He called it Bomb.
Use google translate if you want to read it.

If you want to go all in this is the newest way of getting all the bad Sh… out of your aircon system. This will use ultrasound to break some chemical particles in the chemical liquid turning it into steam and killing it all under 15 min.

That is all.

I had the same thing happen on my prior gen 2008 XC90. Used an entire bottle into the intake area and in the vents directly for good measure. Let it sit and then aired it out. Problem was solved immediately and has not come back in 2 years. I highly recommend giving that a shot.

That is great!

Would you mind sharing which product you used?

Also, where is the intake on the XC90? (Where did you sprayed / applied the product?)

I am updating what I did since I posted the "strong acid or vinegar smell". I did try to "burn" the mold by turning heat to HI but still experienced the smell, on and off. I was thinking to clean to AC evaporator as some the reviews suggested but simply cannot locate in the car (2019 XC90). So, I didn't do the cleaning part. Here are the two things I did, which seems to get ride of the smell problems. First, I changed the cabin AC filter myself. I noticed the one installed at the dealer had the wrong direction (air should follow from regular side to the carbon side of the filter). Second, I try not to use the air recirculation option unless it is too dusty or super hot outside. Well, that seems to do the trick and I haven't had the smell afterwards, for a couple of months.
