240 Speedometer connections

Is the 3pin connector for the Speedometer only responsible for speed? The reason why I am asking is that my tripmeter and my odometer are also both not working. The speedometer is registering max reading right now.
I just unplugged and reseated everything after replacing the clock with a tach. What is happening???

Re: 240 Speedometer connections (gdill2)

Thanks for the links but they all appear to link to the mechanical design of the earlier 240s. Because I was careful enough removing the unit and reinstalling it, I sure would not mind seeing a picture of the connections on the back for the non -mechanical layout. In the meantime, I will remove the cluster once more and check for wiring to the unit.

Re: 240 Speedometer connections (RearWheelPaul)

Yes, I believe you might have given me enough information to get started on the repair. I left it now for weeks but I have to get it fixed sooner or later. Will be soldering 3-pin connector directly to board. I have wiggled the plug several times now carefully and it is a bad connection at 0km/hr or it jumps straight over to 200kph right away. Aside from the full circle pin plug and the half-moon shaped plug and 2 single wire connections to the back, I have not noticed anything else being disconnected. The tach has its own wire and the 3-pin plug for the tach as well. Its got to be a poor connection somehow. Back at it again tomorrow dismantling the dash once more. Will make a picture of the back and tag the connections. Maybe I can send a picture for more details.

Re: 240 Speedometer connection UPDATE

Soldered the three wires directly to the PCB for the speedometer. Attached a plug and connected to the wires accordingly. Pin lay-out as follows:
Red/Black PIN3, Black PIN2, Blue PIN1
All emergency lights are fine but NO odometer and NO speedometer which now registers at 40km/hr. If Black and Blue wires are responsible for ground and 12V, Pin3 must be the signal wire. Does this signal also turn over the odometer? The Green/White wire you mentioned, it possibly my Red/black.
Going back to the beginning, just replacing the large clock with a tach, that was it. Some plastic cap on the connector and some black goo is only missing right now. The little plastic cap is only there to keep the connector in place on the back of the speedometer connector so that is not really necessary.
Purchased new cluster for car. Awaiting arrival of part.

Re: 240 Speedometer connection UPDATE (delorean)

I hate to tell you but I think you hooked up the wire on the wrong location of the back. There is 2 loose wires in the back and if you hook up the wrong wires to the wrong location you will fry your cluster. You may have hooked up the tach wire to the speedo. I know cause I did it to my father's 244 6 years ago and I had to replace the speedo assembly. Depending on the year I have an extra one just pay for the shipping and tell me the milliage I can reset it for you

Re: 240 Speedometer connection UPDATE (7Volvofamily)

The tach wire was installed to the right place the first time but there were two more wires that required hookup to the back of the cluster. The speedometer wires are directly to a 3pin plug, there is no way to interchange this wire with the tach. Then there are two other wires, one going to the RH side of the cluster in the bottom corner (narrow spade) and then another wire going more towards the top middle area. I got those plugged in okay. Aside from the two main connectors, the speedometer connector, 2 wires and the speedometer connection, there is only the 3 pin connector mounted on the back of the tech that feeds my small clock. I have a MPH cluster coming my way which I purchased from Ebay for $11. I will be extremely cautious hooking it up. Mileage instead of KMs but maybe I can find a way to change the car over to miles instead.
Lets keep in touch!!! The cluster will arrive some time next week so I might send you a message first before I potentially destroy another. Somebody mentioned that the gear could be broken as well, but for what I had to do, that would be very coincidental .
