'22 XC60 - No Apple CarPlay

Looked at the new '22 XC60 B5/B6 Inscription today and was surprised to learn that it has no Apple Carplay. Apparently it's an enhancement that is "coming soon." When they announced the Android-based system, I wondered if this might be an issue.

I was thinking of trading in my XC90 for the new XC60 but not without CarPlay.

It's listed on the Volvo website as an available feature (which is not true) and it's not on the window sticker of the vehicle I was considering. Dealer is saying it's coming soon "as a future enhancement" but no ETA. For me, it's a safety issue and really sad Volvo hasn't figured this out by now (as they've had a few years now). I will not buy another car without it.

I do worry that Volvo/Google have given themselves indefinite time to get it implemented. Hope it doesn't become vaporware. One of our cars has the Google system and it's sorely lacking in several respects.

Also, there's no way of playing music except through bluetooth (and it's clunky on the Google system). It's like being transported back to the days when you could get a crummy bluetooth adapter and before AUX ports.

You can plug your phone in to the USB to charge, but that's all it'll do right now - no data transfer.

So my XC90 is in the shop and they gave me a brand new '22 XC60 B5 to drive. I love the way the XC60 drives -- however, the new Android based system is simply not good at all. Limited features, no customizations like I have in my '18 XC90 (such as modifying dash, driving modes, etc). The new dash display is cool in that it shows Google Maps (like the Audi Q7) but that's it. No adjustments...and in fact, there's no odometer reading on it. You have to go into the limited "info" screen to see it. How do I say this....it's VERY VERY basic. No wonder it doesn't have Apple CarPlay -- that's way too sophisticated for it in this stage. The system is basically a shell right now. Screens are clunky looking almost like they were high school programming class projects. I am very surprised. Clearly not refined and up to brand expectations. Needs lots of work so I am staying clear of any new Volvos for awhile until they figure this out.

Not to mention the following notice in the owner's manual:
"
Apps close down
If an app closes down unexpectedly, try the following:

  • open the app again
  • check whether an update is available for the app
  • restart the system (switch off the car, wait a few seconds and then restart it)
  • uninstall and reinstall the app.
"
Typical Android... But a car shouldn't behave like a buggy tablet.

Do we have any idea about how CarPlay will operate under AndroidAutomotive when it will be available (hopefully early 2022, right?)?

Is there any idea if it will be part of the screen (like in Sensus) or if it would cover the whole (or almost all) screen?
I recently saw the Mercedes C Class integration and while the infotainment system is portrait, they have not only used a landscape rectangular CarPlay but it is more like a square (even more a portrait rectangular which is sitting not bad at all.

Any idea for the Volvos?

Hey adaone,

That screenshot you shared in the XC90 thread got me all excited.
Yes I know some have the opinion that you don't judge a car with details like CarPlay but for me, the car experience is the result of all small details becoming a whole. I got used to Wireless CarPlay in my current BMW and if this is scheduled for end of November it is just great because my delivery is planned for 1st week of Jan 2022.

For me the new T6 kind of means having an electric car and an ICE car in one.
If CarPlay is like you shared, it is also having Google's best and Apple's best in the same car.

This is starting to get promising !

I drove my husband's XC40 Recharge again last night and was playing music through bluetooth. It was a glitchy spastic mess, almost unlistenable. He said it does the same thing with his iPhone.

I'm off work for a winter break, and he's leaving the Recharge in the garage and driving my V60 instead. Now as fun as that EV is to drive and as much as we love powering it for about 40% of the cost, that's how much of a difference having dependable maps and reliable music connection makes to his enjoyment of his commute. And I don't blame him.

It's really a shame that Volvo has burned so much of my our goodwill with this car (not only this way but other ways too). We've literally never bought any other make of vehicle, and now I'm hard pressed to imagine our next car will come from this company.

Software issues are common in technology. My 2015.5 S60, bought in early 2016, had a crap load of software issues that took quite a while to rectify before the system was stable. Bring vehicle to dealer, have them make note, so that resolutions can be created. Simply Griping won't make your ownership experience better moving forward.

Here's two off the top of my head that come to mind during the early stages of ownership on my 15.5

1. Spinning Globe of Death. Car would never connect to a Wifi connection. - Fixed with Update
2. Sensus Screen would crash and boot loop - Software Update

I've ranted on this before. I have communicated this to my dealer and Volvo USA: As much as I love our XC60 Recharge, because of my experience with the software (in-car, cloud and iPhone) Volvo will not be on my consideration list for a pure EV in two years. Having a really robust, full-functioning power management and information system is critical to the efficient use of EV's. I don't need (or want) my car to play games or make fart noises, but it better be able to map out the most efficient route plan that doesn't give me range heartburn. It better be dead-on accurate with distance estimates and charging times. And the nav can't take a coffee break just as I'm heading into a spaghetti interstate junction in a city I'm unfamiliar with. And, they shouldn't announce functionality that is "coming" a year or more in advance without any idea when they'll have it available. Volvo has lackadaisical attitude toward making this stuff work and is clearly comfortable putting a system out that doesn't fully work, with no documentation for their service or Volvo on Call folks to refer to. This is a corporate culture issue at Volvo that the Germans and the Asians don't seem to have.

Not justifying what Volvo has done with this software, but I've seen a lot of problems across manufacturers. Acura took just as long to make Android Available on it's current system. My former BMW had bugs in iDrive that took BMW a full year to address. It's crappy, but the kinds of issues that you are seeing with volvo happen industry wide.

Exactly. The maps/navi are so good and Spotify works really well. I thought it was interesting that upon asking for a restaurant destination via the Google Asst. and said restaurant showed three locations indicated by pins with numbers (1, 2, or 3) that I was able to simply say "two" for the navigation to initiate to the correct choice after she said there were multiple locations. Maybe I am easily pleased but my experience has shown no need for A Carplay.

I have an Apple Music subscription.
ANY music available for purchase from Apple is available with the Subscription.
I didn't think I wanted pay for a monthly subscription until I was given 6 months free with the purchase of an Apple product.
Now I am hooked.
With CarPlay I just verbally ask for literally any artist or kind of music and it is played.
Not having that capability along with the comparison of what I read about Volvo reliability and Android versus my experience with CarPlay, makes that a deal breaker for a new Volvo for me at this time.
I just don't have the time or patience to put up with these issues at this time for me.
