I went from an XC40 Recharge to an XC60 B5 and every time I hit the Park button, I either need to press it really hard or multiple times. It feels as though I am going to eventually crash into something! Does anyone else have this issue where the Park button doesn't activate without some force? Could there be some type of fault with my specific vehicle? On my Recharge, I didn't have this issue, most likely due to the regenerative braking. Maybe I just need some time to get used to it?

It shouldn't take a ton of force. I've noticed sometimes it seems to delay showing what gear its gone into and that could cause it to seem like it's not there yet. Shutting the car off in any gear will go to park, so normally I leave my foot on the brake until I shut it off. Though if sitting in the car awhile I would just press the P button.

I just came back from vacation where I rented xc60 (I lease 2021 xc60 at home) with the new park button. This is a safety hazard! There were few instances when I pressed pak and the car actually never went to park and kept rolling. I then started checking on the dash to make sure it actually is in park. This is a turn off and an issue for me when thinking of getting another one next year.
Also, and I'm not sure this is an issue with European spec/model, I could not find a way to turn off the stop/start function in the new software - super annoying!

Ive had it happen to me a few times. I'm not sure if I just didn't hit it right or what each time. However, I always use the parking brake so even when I miss the car doesn't go anywhere (just budges against the brake slightly). And as dfrantz said, just turning the car to off it will automatically put it in park, which is usually what ends up happening in my case.

That is what I always do, come to a stop, and turn off the car. It goes into Park and engages the Parking Brake automatically. And I pull out with a tap and the Parking Brake turns off automatically. So I always use "Park" and the "Parking Brake" but never touch either button.
But what is dumb, is if you put it in Park manually, then turn off the car, it won't put on the Parking Brake automatically, just odd to me.

I just hopped out of my ‘22 B5 into a ‘23 B5 loaner and definitely noticed that the park button needs to be pushed in deeper for the car to go into park. On the plus side, I like that the ‘23 gear shift knob has three positions instead of only two. You can finally go into drive by pulling back once on the shifter.

I did experience the new shifter as well on a XC40 loaner, overall I didn't dislike it, but, I prefer mine. I've never had an issue with the "I have to pull it twice for D or push it twice for R"
To me, every shifter I've ever had was 3 detents to D or 1 detent to R, still 4 total. Just thought of it as a ratchet shifter.
But the new one's manual mode was a nice addition.

I understand you well, but as far as I know, to activate the Park button, you need to pull it up and not press it

I had a good experience today at the dealer. Brought it in for periodic service and mentioned this issue. The service guy said they would be glad to take a look at it, but it would be a pretty thorough disassembly of the center console and at least a couple hours of labor. I told him it wasn't that big a deal, so forget it. He most likely saved me a chunk of change. Honestly, it's only a little stiff and doesn't even happen every time. I'm happy with the simple solution in post #9 here. Just shut it off and it goes into Park all by itself.

Got me, I just went here
XC60 Activating and deactivating the parking brake | Volvo Support EN-CA (volvocars.com)
and it says

Automatic activation
The parking brake is applied automatically

  • when the vehicle is switched off.
  • when the gear selector is moved to P on a steep hill.
  • if the auto-hold brake function at a standstill (Auto hold) is activated and
    • the vehicle has been stationary for a prolonged period of time (5-10 minutes).
    • the vehicle is switched off.
    • the driver has left the vehicle.

I have the same issue in my 23 XC60. Functionality of the park button is intermittent at times and I find myself needing to press the button multiple times for the vehicle to go into park. The button press needs to be relatively forceful in order to get the vehicle to go into park but the amount of force required seems excessive from an effort standpoint (need to be overly deliberate with the button press). There have been plenty of times where I click the park button and the vehicle stays in drive and I take my foot off the brake pedal unknowingly...I have adopted the ignition switch method of putting the vehicle into park. Mentioned it to the dealer but the service rep didn't really have a comment on whether this is expected behavior or not.

Another option for those concerned is to use the brake hold feature. I love it. Anytime the car comes to a stop the car will not roll forward until the gas pedal is pressed. Very relaxing at stop lights and in traffic. It's the A button behind the parking brake switch on the console.

Service rep got back to me and said that the park button in my vehicle behaves similar to other XC60 vehicles, that's just how it is...

I have/do press it down all the way and sometimes the vehicle does not go into park.
Yes, you have to be quite deliberate about it. I've only seen this behavior in the last couple of months -- until then it only required a light, casual press of the button, but now it takes a real effort.

Certainly not problematical, just a very minor annoyance.
