2019 XC90 completely dead

Hi. My car didn’t unlock using the fob or the app. Used the key to manually unlock the door, found the car is completely dead. Had no issues or any warning when I used it last time yesterday. I was told alarm would sound if door is unlocked manually but nothing. Anyone else had such an experience?

I would suspect something other than simple battery drain as the car would 'know' before it was totally dead. Make sure there are no signs of rodent damage.

I tried jump start a few times, car powers up but won’t start. When I try to start all I hear is click click sound from the engine bay, sound even continues for a few seconds after disconnecting jumper cables. Plugged a battery charger (2amp) yesterday, almost 20 hrs later it still hasn’t shown any progress. Dealers are closed on the weekend here, I believe I should get a new battery but when I search for battery most places show 2 battery options, original 800cca or slightly bigger 850 cca capacity. Does anyone had any input about the bigger battery?

As long as the higher capacity battery fits it’s not an issue. Power draw is determined by the devices connected and the power sources are rated for “up to” what it can deliver. As long as your not over drawing on the battery (like selecting a lower capacity battery) you won’t have an issue.

if car was locked/alarmed when it died, it will go off when battery returns to 10v+. Make sure the key fob is resting in cup holder while charging (in case it does) or when you replace the battery.

Source: battery on my 23 V60 died within 48 hours of delivery while locked in driveway.

Yes. kind of a story but the V60 was a retired service loaner than I had shipped from out of state, they reflashed all the software before shipping as part of PDI and instead of the latest AAOS they installed what the car had when it was originally built last fall.

The local dealer who it was towed to had seen this once before: the car was locked with no accessories on or any possible parasitic draw, and died-died. No codes, the theory in both cases (mine and one they saw before) was specific AAOS version and power management/something that should be asleep still running. No issues since 2.9 update.

The SPA Volvos are a lot of software, to me the AA based ones still have more bugs than Sensus/QNX ones. On my phone I usually take the last app updates, the V60 is not getting the next one until it’s been out for quite a while and everyone else has beta tested it.

Thanks for the hint! I think that's a smart strategy of "updating software as late as you can". So the software auto update should be turned off? The dealer sets auto update for me.

BTW, is Volvo AAOS a general version from Google, or some customized version with additional changes by Volvo? I hope it's the former for simplicity.

AGM batteries seem to do this.. and yours is 4-5 years old. In my C70, I never had any problems or idicators. Drove the car to work. Finished the day, and dead (also has backup battery for alarm which was perfectlly functional). Thankfully I work at a Volvo store and it was my early day to leave so parts was still there. Didn't even bother to try and save the battery, got a new one and it's been fine.

The fact that it sorta powered up with a jump box tells you it's the battery. The only unknown is if there is an extra draw, or if the battery is just old. If still under factory warranty as a late 2019 sale date, I believe it would still be covered, at least in the US.

In addition to the main battery, there is also a 12V auxiliary battery to check

Thank you all for your input Replacing the main battery fixed the problem. I learned BMS reset is required after battery replacement. Couldn’t find anything useful on how to do it yourself. Is it really required? Has anyone used OBD2 scanner to do so? Or only VIDA/DICE will work?
