2018 xc60 low beam headlight malfunction

Hey all. Tonight I just got a low beam headlight malfunction. I have all led lights. Only the low beam on the drivers side doesn't work. All high beams work. All active bending works. At the beginning of my trip when I turned the wheel slightly (not enough for the cornering lights to come on) the low beam would blink intermittently. Now it's off completely. This is frustrating as I only have 40k on the car. I bought cpo and extended Volvo care warranty. Would this be covered? Also, any idea what this could be and where I should check? Thanks for tips in advance!

Bulbs won't be covered... even though part of the purpose of LED bulbs is that they are designed to last the life of the vehicle. So in theory, they should be covered in that sense, but nope. I believe the everything beyond the bulbs are covered, however. Wiring, connections, active bending motor(s), etc.

Have you experienced any condensation or water inside the bad head lamp? Condensation is apparently considered normal to an extent, although prolonged moisture exposure doesn't seem like a good combination.

It’s a warranty item, so just take it to a dealer to be fixed for free. Could have had a crack develops and let moisture inside. Could simply be a faulty LED or driver for the system. It’s a very odd failure, certainly not common. Wouldn’t worry about it….that’s why we have cars with a warranty.

I'm just stating the facts 🙃

Bulbs are not covered.

Bulbs do not exist on LED headlights ;)
Only part that can be replaced is the control unit on LED headlights

The bulb only exists on halogen headlamps

CPO will cover them, depending on the issue. I sincerely hope the OP doesn't have to pay out of pocket.

Just an update for everyone. I have an appointment for this coming Thursday. The service manager said he's quite sure it's a warranty item but it depends what has caused the issue. I have a $100 deductible which I can live with. Certainly better than $2k or so. Thanks everyone for your replies. If for nothing more than informational reference, I will keep you all posted when I find out more information. Really odd to me that this light went out with 40k on the car.

As promised, an update on my headlight issue. According to dealer, fault tracing has it narrowed down to hcm (which I assume to mean headlight control module) or the headlight itself. Recommending replacement of both at no cost to me. Unfortunately, headlight assembly is backordered with no date of arrival so they are ordering the hcm first to see if that will fix it. I'm hoping it does. If not, we'll take it from there to see what my options are. Hopefully it'll be done by Wednesday of next week. I'm certain the microchip shortage and port issues have combined to make this an issue. Couple that with the fact that, to my understanding, this is not a common issue and it all makes sense. Again, I'll keep everyone posted. I did ask if there's one hcm to control both or one for each headlight. She (the service advisor) didn't seem sure but said she thought there were individual ones per side. I also said, "If the hcm is bad, wouldn't the high beams on that same side also fail?". She also wasn't sure about that. Wonder if @Tech can chime in on this?

Could be either the HCM or the assembly like they said. I've seen an assembly need replacement for a fault code before but I don't know the code (I didn't work on it.) The light was also working, just giving a warning message.
Thanks for responding. Very odd indeed. You'd think they'd have it faulted deeper down to discern. Especially considering replacement of headlight unit is more than the HCM and because of warranty, is on volvos dime.

We can't always fault trace down to a 100% certain fix- sometimes it comes down to narrowing things down and taking an educated guess.

If I remember correctly, the assembly comes with a new HCM. So since it isn't costing you anything, they probably want to do that to replace both possible causes at once.

Yeah. I wasn't blaming the techs. The techs there are fantastic! It's the engineering. I'm not upset as it's costing me 0 instead of $2800- though I am surprised it went so soon.

Another update! Hcm arrived and didn't fix the issue. They did say that within a day, they are expecting the headlight assembly itself to arrive in the warehouse (nj). They hope to have it fixed by Friday but at the latest Monday. So that's some good news. Wish me luck. A part of me still wants to know exactly why it failed internally. Pretty sure that might be beyond my technical know-how.
