Anyone have any issues with the Check Engine Light being on? I bought the car 3 weeks ago and didn't notice that the Check Engine Light was on.... Took it in for service today as they said it probably just needs to be reset. Problem: the can't get a computer reading for the car as to what the problem is. They're checking with Corporate Technical Service to see what the remedy should be... Lesson learned, make sure everything is perfect before driving off with a new car.

Any thoughts/experience with this problem would be appreciated

Thanks

Had mine come on several times (6-7) over a two week period. I stopped at a Volvo dealer and inquired as I was out of town, hundreds of miles from home the first time it happened. He casually asked if it was blinking or just on. It was not blinking so he said not to worry about it and book it in when I got home.

My local dealer did a software update and no problem since. I would have been more worried had I noticed the car performing differently but there was no apparent effect other than the warning light itself.

This same problem happened to my brother with his GMC truck. He had to replace the wiring harness three times at around $1500 each time. He ended up putting mothballs under the hood at night and removed them when he drove. Did a quick search and found this article:

You'll notice that Volvo is on the list of "tasty" cars - along with most other brands. This article also indicates that there a distasteful tape that can be used to wrap the wiring to try and avoid this problem.

Do you park your XC90 outside? Sounds like there may be a garage in your future.

Crazy enough i do garage it. The problem existed before i bought the car (bought it 3 weeks ago)... My big mistake is driving the car home from dealership while the check engine light is on. I'm expecting them to fix this as their sales person should have seen the check engine light and not let me drive off...

Again, all thoughts/advice appreciated. Thanks!

It's hard to imagine that a squirrel or mouse was just waiting for you to bring your new car home and in 3 weeks, had made a snack out of it.
I will say that my son's father-in-law had his new Avalon munched on to the tune of $1,000 although I believe that his insurance covered it under comprehensive.

Permit me to eat my words. I took our V60 in yesterday for a check engine light only to find that squirrels had made a nest on top of the gas tank. There is a nipple coming off the top of the fuel pump module that doesn't do anything but they chewed the end off. This allowed fumes to escape and the evap system wouldn't hold pressure. The entire pump assembly had to be replaced to the tune of $1469.

If the problem existed when you drove the car off the lot (ie if the check engine light was on), they should be covering this for you. And if you saw the light before you left, your mistake was leaving the dealership without a resolution or promise to resolve in writing. If you didn't see it before you left, when did you first notice? On the drive home (where no critters could have eaten wiring on your watch), or after (where they could have)?

It was a mistake.. I saw the light on the dashboard when i drove off, but i wasn't sure what lights should and shouldn't have been on... Chalk it up to newbie syndrome.

I spoke with the sales manager, he's checking with the owner to see if they'll cover it. He wants me to bring it in so they can inspect it and mentioned getting us out of that car and into a new one... anyone ever hear of that before?

My car's engine light came on today. It just had annual service and software updated 1 months ago. Not sure it's software related, or sensors, or the gas cap. Anyone knows how to reset it if it's gas cap? I want to try that first before going to the dealer. But I don't think the car is turned on when I pumped gas last time.

I brought the car to a dealer. it's a faulty pressure sensor problem. They fixed it.

I've had something like this happen to me in my truck. We had just had a bad storm over the weekend and on Monday morning after I jumped into my truck to head to work, the car wouldn't start. After thinking it was a dead battery I got some jumper cables and popped open my hood. In the corner of my engine compartment something just looked off...there was what looked like a birds nest. I picked it up and underneath was a slew of torn wires. I threw the nest on the other side of the street and called a tow truck. An hour or two later the tow arrives and I explain to him what happened. So I popped open the hood to show him and the nest was back in the same spot! A few days later I got my truck back...I put cayenne pepper in the engine compartment and never had a problem again!
