Me Too

S60 T5 AWD no matter what. I drive a vehicle not just for commuting but for enjoyment and I enjoy driving more than most people I know. I wanted the T5 for enjoyment and selfish reasons; I had no other concerns. Everyone else who isn't an enthusiast can get the 4 cylinder (or people not partial to the inline 5 turbo).

Very true. Finally had a chance to test drive the V60 R-Design with the T5 Drive-E today and I walked away with somewhat mixed feelings.

Engine was smooth and quiet when just cruising along but when you step on it sounds coarse and it doesn't feel like you'd have 245 hp under the hood. Sadly it just doesn't have any special character. On the other hand the 8-speed auto works like a dream with this engine, sport mode feels great and shifting with the paddles I thought was even more fun. After spirited driving session I saw the fuel consumption on par with the 5-cylinder. Overall I have to say the 5-cylinder T5 wins in pure enjoyment and feeling.

I'm still going to take it for another longer spin since it's there for the whole week. Oh and the Plug-In Hybrid V60 too!

I'm a bit surprised with the negativity towards the T5 E, have you all really driven it hard? Coming from a C32 AMG and currently owning a Boxster Spyder I also thought that 4 Cylinder Turbo would be inadequate but it's just the opposite. It has plenty of down low torque to take off from lights and on the highway it's crazy how quick I can get up to 90. No it's not going to push you back into your seat but it has enough to get around the slow drivers. Granted the gas mileage does suffer if you really push it.

Personally the mileage mattered to me too, with a 90 mile a day commute I genuinely appreciate the reduced visits to the gas station and so does my wallet.

I'm right in line with this comment. The T5 Drive E isn't a race car...but people on this forum tend to talk about it like it's a Honda Civic. Feels smooth and linear and totally agree that you're at 90 before any of your senses would tell you so. It's a good setup.

It's a good setup.
It is, yes and I still would buy a Volvo with this engine because in the end the pros outweigh the cons. I'll always miss the sound and feeling from the 5 and 6-cylinder engines but I can't deny the fact that I still had fun with the V60 I drove many times last week.

There are a few of us here who like the driveE and also own and like a legacy engine (5 or 6 cyl). You need to be the judge, not The All-Knowing Voice of the Internet...

FWIIW, after having lived with a T5e engine for a few months and liking it very much, I finally got to drive a T6e this week and was a tiny bit underwhelmed. It most certainly was more powerful than the T5e at the low end, but it wasn't as substantial in feel as the old T6, which I have owned for three years. I also felt that, while the T5e is amazingly quiet for a four-banger, the T6e was a lot noisier when the supercharger was engaged but quieted down considerably when the supercharger drops out and the turbo takes over. Given that the T6e requires premium fuel, whereas the T5e, T5, and T6 do not, I ruled out the T6e as a choice in my next car, which will be ordered this month. Standard disclaimer: this is purely my personal perception and opinion and is not intended to be an "all-knowing voice". ;)

No doubt that we are talking opinions here. I personally have not driven any of the new 5 or 6 cylinder engines so I can't offer a comparison. The last Volvo I drove was a V70R which I thought was really nice. I didn't bother to test drive the new 5 or 6 simply because the gas mileage mattered.

Ahh, now that's better... What has 5 peppy cylinders, AWD and real leather seats? My nice loaner for the day, with strangely, no AWD badge (popped the hood to be sure, though I could tell by the smooth engine)! Oh, and the collision alert just saved me from backing into a soccer mom in a fast moving Suburban, at the shopping center! Thanks Volvo service!

Sorry T5-e folks, no thanks! :p

I agree with this - in sport mode, the T5 E goes like a bat out of hell. It accelerates as fast as I would ever want, and I enjoy speed and acceleration. I realize this is all relative, and no, it won't push you back in your seat, but it feels quick, fast and nimble. It also delivers a satisfying growl, at least to my ear.

It's great that you guys enjoy the T5 E-drive, if it works for you but for those of us who don't have a legacy engine or want another T5 and don't need to worry as much about mileage or w/e, the T5 AWD wins.

Now the potential new Polestar cars 2.0t and electric engine AWD I'm interested in despite the 4 cylinder.

Hi guys, keeping everything else constant, what would you pick? 2015.5 T5 E-drive FWD or 2014 T5 AWD? What is your rationale?
Thanks!
Pete
2014 T5 AWD

-hate the fwd torque steer "squirm" upon acceleration.
-price difference must be quite large. It was on a 2015 vs 2015.5 I bought.
-real world fuel economy difference is probably a lot less than the EPA numbers suggest from my limited test drive experience (23mpg overall)
-awd may have more resale appeal in northern climates.

Both have the new restyle and gauge cluster. Neither is a bad choice.

I drove a V60 with sport pkg and that engine and I felt it was very sporty and plenty quick to have fun with. It was very smooth, just in a different way than a 6 cylinder. I just liked the R design I6 power and awd handling better and never wanted to wish I'd gotten "more". We don't drive enough miles in this car for the mediocre fuel economy (under 23 mpg combined so far) to matter.

I'm driving a brand new XC60 loaner right now with the T6 engine and I have to admit it's a very nice engine. Yes it definitely has better acceleration, especially at the higher speeds and RPM's. But I don't think it's any smoother or more quiet than the T5E. I also think the T5E transmission seems to be a better match to the engine, I never find myself wanting to shift the gears manually in my T5E but I have already shifted manually multiple times in the T6. Major difference here in my opinion. I know its not an apples to apples comparison, perhaps I need to drive a V60 T6 to confirm all of this.
