Hi gang,

This place has been a wealth of knowledge, so I figured I'd see if someone has suggestions/thoughts on my issue. I bought a 2013 XC60 T6 this past summer, and while it has been mainly a great car, I am having an issue that bugs me...
When I slow down to almost stopping, like a "California stop", the car stays in second gear, and then really clunks down into first when I start to accelerate again. I have to come to a complete stop to avoid this.

Any ideas or suggestions? Is it just a tired transmission that I need to learn to live with? Car has about 90K miles on it.

Thanks for any suggestions,

I believe there is a specific software update they provided to try and correct this.

My previous '11 and current' 14 both do it to some extent so I absolutely understand the feeling.

I paid the dealer to update my 11, and no change occurred.
I also think I heard it is supposed to correct this but as always, can introduce other issues, so I'm just getting on a schedule to keep doing fluid exchanges and deal with this for my current '14.

If you haven't done the transmission yet, good time to, and will generally help with longevity

I had this issue with my '13 XC60 T6. The dealer service department had done a software update around 60K miles that caused it to happen. Reverting to the previous software version fixed it. There is a TSB out there about the issue. It's what I used to get them to switch back to the previous software version. Search the forum to find it. They still charged me for an hours labor to rollback to the software.

This is totally normal behavior and you don’t need to worry about this affecting your transmission life. All TF80SCs on T6 cars exhibit this - mine does, as well as most others. It’s a matter of programming, since the transmission won’t downshift to 1st until you have come to a full and complete stop, yet anything more than 5-10% throttle application from 1-10mph will kick down into 1st.

I have adjusted my driving style to compensate, basically don’t give it more than 5-10% throttle if you haven’t come to a complete stop, like you’re driving a manual car and are gradually easing off the clutch at the same time. This reduces the harshness of the clunk, and in many cases the trans will stay in 2nd since the power demand isn’t high enough.

I just move the gear lever to the left for manual shifting and leave in in 2nd gear - the car will get moving in 2nd anyway and when speed picks up I just move the lever back to the auto shifting position .. until traffic slows down to the extent that I know the transmission is in 2nd gear. Takes a bit of getting used to but it takes away the "clunk" which imho can't be good for the transmission.

I do this too if there's really bad traffic.

All three of my TF-80SC vehicles do this.

The ZF6HP26 in my old Range Rover does the same thing. As mentioned above, a modification to driving style helps and in my case a full flush and new filter helped a lot. We are picking up our first XC60 in a week so I don't have any experience with this particular vehicle yet but figured I'd throw my thoughts out there. ...or you could just come to a full stop ;)
