2006 S40 Fog Lights Upgrade Question

I took delivery a week ago, and decided it might be nice to have Volvo accessory foglights. I called the dealer and they informed me that it would cost $204.00, plus around $100.00 install. I thought this was reasonable. Later they contacted me to say that the car would need a switch module added for an additional $165.00! Yikes! I told them that there seemed to be a module in the dash, and that the fog light switch was a blank to the right of the gas door switch.

Does anyone know if the entire module has to be replaced, or if there is some kind of under the hood relay that has to be added? The additional $165.00 for the initially forgotten switch seems excessive.

Will the front accessory fog lights be worth all this money?

I've got an install scheduled this Tuesday. Help this newbie out with some advice before I take the plunge.

Don't do it!

Boston Volvo has them for about 160 bucks... I believe that's all the hardware you need although you'll still need to have the dealer upgrade your software.

Re: 2006 S40 Fog Lights Upgrade Question (Jazz2)

I was in the same situation as you last summer. I wanted to add the fog lights, but it seemed like the dealer prices were a little high. I ordered the fog light package from Boston Volvo, and was able to install everything myself, and took it to the dealer for the software upgrade. I think the package and the installation cost me about $200 total (Kit + .5 Hour labor for software). The install itself is pretty simple, and only took me about half an hour or so. The instructions included with the kit describe everything pretty well, and if I can install them myself, I'm sure anyone can.

...initially forgotten switch...

Your Volvo dealer ordered the wrong fog lamp kit. This is an easy mistake - Volvo inexplicably offers kits that contain lamps but not the switch. Make sure your Parts Department orders:

For the S40: p/n 30722465

For the V50: p/n 30722467

Both of these kits contain two lamps and one switch.

Re: 2006 S40 Fog Lights Upgrade Question (Parts @ Boston Volvo)

So, Boston Volvo. Should the thing cost $204.00 for fog lamp kit, plus $165 for switch, and about $100.00 in labor? for $469? I tried to get ahold of my local dealer today to see if we are both on the same page about this.

I'm not too handy so I'm thinking self install is not an option. I once had my Fiat dealer install a dimmer switch for my dash lights and it dimmed those lights, plus my outside parking lights at the same time

Thank for the help. The S40 is a great car!

In my signature to this message is a link to the On-Line Store of Boston Volvo Village (we're a Volvo dealership). We have in that store the genuine Volvo front fog lamp kit for your S40 at $152.92 (Volvo's suggested list price is $179.90) plus $8.95 for UPS shipping. This kit contains: two fog lamps, switch and instructions (the rest has been built into your S40 and is activated with a software download). It really is...as easy as that.

The software download will cost you about $25.00 (some dealership prices will vary). The labor to do the download is completely up to the policy of your Volvo dealership Service Department.

As I wrote above, Volvo can have conflicting information regarding accessories. Experience has taught me to sell the above fog lamp kit part numbers to our customers.

Well all ended well. The switch was included in the price of the kit, and labor was $50.00 dollars less than quoted. Maybe they felt guilty over having to fix the sunroof only two week after delivery
