2006 S40 2.4i - Close to stalling, check engine light

Hi. I recently made a post about this issue but im creating another as the issue has changed. Anyways, heres exactly whats happened. (If you can, PLEASE help. We've been pulling hair out for months over this).

So when we bought the car, the check engine light was on, but we didn't have any issues. Drove just fine. Then we started notcing the throttle response was slightly delayed. Give it gas? It'd take about a second to take it. The code it through was for the MAF sensor (P0101). We changed the MAF sensor and still had the same issue. Just kinda forgot about it and the CEL was still on.

Then the car started stalling whenever coming to a stop. WE cleaned the throttle body, changed all spark plugs, changed the Fuel Rail Pressure (FPS) sensor, changed the gaskets around the cylinders, changed the PCV vacuum line, and even replaced the MAP sensor in the manifold. The issue persisted, and we couldn't find any vacuum leaks ourselves. Then we started notcing another code, along with the P0101. The code was P0172 (System too rich).

Then we bought a brand new, genuine volvo MAF sensor (keep in mind EVERY part we've put into the car has been a genuine volvo). The issue persisted.

We took it in last week to an independent Volvo repair shop (http://www.nordicmotorsrepair.com). They found a vacuum leak, sealed it, but it didn't fix the issue. Now the P0172 code is gone, but we still have P0101. This didnt fix it, so then we tried ourselves resetting the computer (ECU). The issue got better- it stopped stalling. The throttle response is still delayed, but the idle is much better. Now when coming to a stop, it comes close to stalling, but the engine revs itself back up and recovers. Now, when driving on the highway, letting off the accelerator causes the car to coast, and the RPMs stay up at a high level, wherever they were when letting off the pedla. (like its supposed to). Before, the RPMs would drop to idle, and even almost stall on the highway.

They called us back after doing research and told us to bring it in today (which we did). They connected our car with another S40 to the VIDA system and compared ALL the data. They still couldn't find any issue. They said they could start throwing parts in but itd be between 1000-2000$!!

Any ideas? This is the non-turbo. If anyone can help at all or has any ideas please let us know! Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Mine had a very similar problem recently. I never had a CEL but at its worst I couldn't even stop (or sometimes coast) without the car stalling, unless I kept the car revved up a bit. Mine was throwing codes relating to the throttle body. One said the voltage was too high.

The problem has seemingly solved itself on its own now though so I can't confirm if that was the issue. But I don't think it would be a bad idea to replace the throttle body

We're pretty sure its not the throttle body though. The independent repair shop we had it in at, the guy their said he has been working on volvos for over 30 years, and he's never seen anything like this. We mentioned the throttle body to him and he said its just not what it is. They tried some things, but they haven't given up on it. He said they're going to keep doing a lot of research but i was seeing if we could get anywhere on here.

It seems many people are having similar issues. Anyone else have any ideas? Like I said, the independent repair shop (Volvo certified) said they're going to look into and do more research. The guy that owns the place said in over 30 years of working on Volvo's he's never seen anything like this.

mmustangsrus, you subbed, so I'm assuming you're having or had a similar problem? Can you tell us, if so, what exactly you have going on?

I would be interested to see the Long Term Fuel Trim percent when P0172 was set (in freeze frame data). I also would like to see Fuel Pump Duty Cycle at idle.

I may have this backwards but I believe System Too Rich is the car trying to inject more fuel to compensate for a high oxygen reading from the front O2.

My guess is your fuel pump is getting weak and cannot keep fuel rail pressure in spec, so the car is increasing the injection time to get more fuel into the combustion chambers and has maxxed out. (thinking to myself now) I would think that scenario would have fuel pressure faulty signal code though.

I would put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail to verify fuel pressure is correct while observing fuel pump duty cycle through VIDA at idle. If both of those are in spec, then I'm wrong.

Would you like me to get a freeze frame, etc and send this all to you? We reset the long term fuel trims but it might still be out of wack.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but double check the connections to all of your sensors, especially the MAF. I have been having similar idle fluctuations and stalling ('05 2.4i) and also already replaced sensors. I think my connector is going bad, because when it starts exhibiting issues, I pop the hood and wiggle the connector, and it goes back to normal. Worth a shot. Last time i did this with engine running, and there was an audible change in engine rpm when I adjusted connecting cable to maf.

I know the service shop we had it in at already checked the connection and the connectors for the MAF sensor. We tried the rocking back and forth thing and it never changed. Its a constant issue when coming to a stop.
