So, minding my own business, I start up the car one recent morning, and get both a "Check Engine" Light and a Warning Triangle in the center of the dash, with an explanation from the DIM "Transmission Service Required".
Hooked up the VIDA, and it tells me that the "Check Engine" is the usual false positive that seems to be cured by removing and replacing my (locking) gas cap on after a fill-up.
But the tranny codes are TCM 0020 and TCM 001F.
Both are speed sensor problems.
Hard to imagine that these would crop up at start-up after sitting overnight, but I suspect a pothole causing a connector to give up the ghost.
Drove from NYC to Groton CT and back with this problem , and I noticed no problem with shifting.
I figured I'd see the "too many hours of hot tranny fluid" error due to a lack of proper code clearing when tranny fluid was changed, and the 189K miles on the beastie. But nope, I got sensor-related codes.
The codes can be cleared, but they reappeared after driving a few miles over city potholes and several exit ramps, so this problem appears to be a bad connection somewhere.
Does anyone have any wisdom on any commonality between these two speed sensors? Might they share the same grounding wire? I can certainly ohm out the CANBUS wire and check for power on the power wire, but I do not have any prior experience with either of these sensors.
There appear to be no tales of woe and intrigue that mention these codes together. I am unsure why the Check-Engine light comes on WITH the "transmission service required" warning, as the CEL relates to the catalytic converter, but is consistently fixed by fiddling with the gas cap, so it appears to actually by an evaporatative-loss system complaint.
May I please buy a vowel?
